| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 14, 2008 Pours a deep coffee color with a dark tan head that subsides quickly, leaving amorphous lacing. Nose is smoky and slightly sweet, with hints of caramel and molasses. Taste is redolent of coffee, molasses and burnt wood. Hearty yet slightly watery mouthfeel. Aftertaste reminds me of what my clothes smell like after sitting around a campfire. HughConway (367), Washington, USA

Pours opaque dark brown, with barely translucent edging of muddy amber. A beige head rose to a half inch, and fell quickly to a mostly bare surface, with some tight foam on the edges and a whisp on center. No lacing except for a couple of dots.
Aromatics are full of porter character, with light smoke. Bakers chocolate, toffee, caramel, coffee grounds, and smoldering twigs.
Mouthfeel is somewhat creamy and thickish. Lingering viscosity.
The pallet is filled with roasted cocoa nubs, dark coffee beans, and an afterthought of embers. Hints of vanilla, burnt ends, and Kahlua follow through.
Finishes with lingering smoke and some mild acrid character.
The smoke seems to have faded since 2005, but the brew has picked up some nice complexity.
A well balanced beer, but I’m left wanting an "Imperial" version.

| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Mar 3, 2008 Pungent smokiness. Smooth mouthfeel but rather watery. Smoky taste seems a bit artificial. Tastes like a sub par porter doused with liquid smoke. Average. SQNfan (591), Wheaton, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 3, 2008 Bomber. Notes are from memory. The nose had a wonderful smokiness to it, a mix between a campfire and 12-hour smoked ribs. The palate shows some bitter hops toward the finish but that melded nicely with the smokey edge.
