2007. Pours pitch black. No light escapes. Big, brown head, fades, but maintains a good collar to the end of the glass. Aroma is rich, smokey and complex, with lots of dark malts, some faint dark fruits, and a bit of chocolate. Smoke is big, but very smooth, backed by a real nice, rich maltiness. Not too sweet. Hops are subdued, and not apparent, except in balance. Aftertaste is quick, clean and softly smoky. Really nice, with some great notes from the alderwood. johnadam2002 (529), Hainesport, New Jersey, USA

Medium bodied with a creamy texture. Aroma of chocolate and smoke. Initial flavor of milk chocolate, tobacco, and black patent malts, countered by a good amount of bitterness, char, peat, and tobacco. The finish is very ashy and peppery, with some astringency. Out of the fridge, its too bitter and smoky. At cellar temp, the malts and residual sweetness blend in to tame the finish. Very well done, but perhaps a bit too smoky for my personal tastes. slimchill (781), Austin, Texas, USA

Lots of depth in the flavor, barbecue and liquid smoke with coffee and a mild sweetness. If this beer had a bit more body it would be a much higher rating, but it’s smooth and drinkable nonetheless. oreogobbler (217), Austin, Texas, USA

Really nice smoky aroma, but still maintains that malty porter quality. Sausage and smoked grains, malty sweet with some light hoppiness. Dark brown-black clear with a thin off-white head. Medium watery body with medium carbonation, just on the thin side. Starts mildly sweet, with that malty dry-roasted grainy quality of a good porter, then the smoke hits. Meaty and smoky sausage notes with a good amount of carbonic acidity and light dry hoppy finish. Has a nice mellow balance.
