Smells of huge smoke, almost smoked salmon like, and very roasty. Taste is sweet malt, very huge roast, toasty, chocolate and delicious. Smooth as silk in the mouth and off the charts drinkable. A must try experience.

So I get to San Francisco with my wife and we’re both pretty jet lagged, but on the way to the hotel I see a BevMo so I gotta run over. I grabbed a bottle of this even though I had an 06 ready to rate yesterday that’s still in the fridge back in PA, so here’s my rating of this year’s. Good looking dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is dominated by very smoky malts, some chocolate, coffee, chicory, and some hops. Flavor is of a thick barbecue sandwich – lots of smoke here with some roasty, chocolate-sweet malts, a nice hop backing, and thick bread soaked in BBQ sauce. This is not only a tasty and full bodied smoked, it has a nice thick-porter thing going on – much like Dark Horse Black Bier or Olfabrikken porter. Nice, full mouthfeel – I can tell why this one is a classic. I have a feeling I’ll like the older one even better MaltOMeal (653), Land of Sugar, Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 22, 2007 22oz bottle. Pours black dark with thin light-brown head which dissipated quickly. Aroma - ok, this is definitely smoky. Wow! There is some sweet malt in the aroma, but the smoke is very prominent. Flavor is smoky, smoky and also malt. After awhile, I got used to the smokiness and was able to appreciate this as a porter. It definitely has the malty taste I like, but the smoke comes through so much in the nose that I had to just accept it and let it accentuate the malt to get it’s overall effect. Mouthfeel is medium with a little bitter aftertaste. Definitely much better than the last smoked brew I tried. Taverner (880), San Ramon, California, USA

Dark rich chocolate dark malty goodness poured with a thick brown head that receded some nice lacing. Flavor is smoke and chocolate - not very hoppy but that’s not what it’s shooting for. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 17, 2007 Bottle. Pours a very dark brown, light brown head that dissipated fairly quickly. This beer reminds me of a smoky, less creamy version of Guinness. Smokey coffee flavor with hints of dark chocolate and a bitter finish. Was reluctant to try a "smoky" beer but it’s better than I thought it would be. ucusty (1915), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 4, 2007 2005 bottle poured into dimpled mug. Opaque brown, almost oily pour. Thin tan head with medium lacing. More smoked than porter. Aroma wood smoke and coffee bits. Flavour dominated by slick smoke but balanced with roasted malt and chocolate. Very interesting beer, full of character.
