Also chocolate, and coffee aroma is in the mix. Flavor is very nice. Smoky, but balances nicely with the chocolate and slight hint of black coffee. Very nice beer. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 26, 2009 22 oz bottle 2008. Rich dark brown in the glass with a lasting creamy head. Roasted malt, coffee, and smoke on the nose. Cold it’s sharp and spicy/bitter with a touch of hops. As it warms the sweetness and smoke is more prevalant, but not overpowering at all. Some dark fruit and chocolate appear. Yummy. skortila (2905), Bunnik, Netherlands
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 25, 2009 Bottled. Aroma has coffee roast and smoked bacon, very much like the Schlenkerla’s. Black coloured beer with a beige, lasting head. The taste is slightly sweet, has some bitterness, roast and smoked bacon. Medium bodied, some carbonation. Outstanding. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 24, 2009 Bottle courtesy of zathrus13. Poured black with a thick frothy head and big sheets of lace on the glass. Lots of smoke in the nose also hard roasted malt. Pretty thin body with lively carbonation. Flavor is smoked bacon and slightly sour lots of roasted notes and some anise coming thru. Finishes roasted with some wood notes. Drink4Satan (586), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jun 24, 2009 Complements of alldaydrinker who was kind enough to swap a CL Rosso for an 05’ of this. Pours a near-opaque black colour (a bit of ruby edges when held to the light) with a thin, but lasting tan head that leaves spotty lacing. The nose is of orasted chocolate malt, red grapes, dates, and of course, highly pronounced hickory-like smoke. The flavour is intensely smokey and wonderfully mellow. Notes of bacon dominate throughout, with roasted malts, lightly roasted coffee and dark chocolate coming through moreso in the finish, which is medium in duration. Even before the smoke hits though, there is a moment where suggestions of malted milk balls is distinctive, and delicious! The palate is silken with soft carbonation and a full body that coats tooth and gum. The aging process, though beneficial to the smoothness of the palate and melding of flavours, must have also cut away from the hop presence significantly, as there are almost none to be detected. Mild citrus possibly. Either way, this is an outstanding brewski. Thanks Jeff! emerica56 (582), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jun 24, 2009 Got this in a trade from AlldayDrinker, cheers Jeff thanks for the 2005. The color is a dark black with some light brown on the edges as you tilt the glass. The initial pour has a thick tan head but it fades as quick as the pour. You can really smell the smoked malt blended with the chocolate in the aroma. The initial sip has so much smoke with the right amount of blended chocolate and roasted malt. There is a small hop bitterness, but nothing distinguishable. This particular beer has been aging for 4 years so that may have diminished the hop flavors as well as some other flavor the brewer was going for. Overall it has great carbonation and is balanced but i wish i had it when it was first released. MarinaMarket (31), Washington, USA

I remember the first time I tried it at home, and my wife asked for a taste. SHe wrinkled her nose, contorted her face, and I told her to spit it back in. That’s how good this beer is. The only way I can describe it is like the taste of charcoal briquettes after a steak has been cooked over them. Tasty! zizzybalubba (376), Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 19, 2009 Updated: Nov 14, 200922 oz. bottle (2007 Vintage). This one was a gift from my Dad, so "Thanks Dad". Dark black pour with a little head. Essentially a very good porter with a nice, balanced smoky flavor. Not as overwhelming as something like Smoke Jumper. The smoke flavor is pleasant and pairs well with the porter. A great and certainly unique beer. Love it...I had the opportunity to try a 3 year old bottle today (11/14/2009, so that would make it a 2006 bottle). I cannot believe how prominent the smoked sausage/bacon flavor is and how that actually makes for a good beer. Really amazing stuff.
