ross (1531), charlotte, North Carolina, USA Aug 28, 2006 I am always skeptical about opening a smoked beer, because I will freely admit that it is not my taste at all, and I also would never be trading to get any of these, BUT - this one is really good. Porter, so its a good style to start with, then you add a little hint of smoke to it, and it makes it rather interesting. Rich, full bodied, roasted chocolate and smoked malts make this one a very unique beer. Unlike the other smoked beers where I have either poured them out, or choked them down, this one I did neither with. Pleasing to drink, smooth, rich, and pretty good. The smokiness is not offensive at all on this beer. Went pretty good with some smoked sausage. Dont know if I would seek it out again, but I certainly wouldnt turn down another bottle of it.
blutt59 (685), Dallas, Texas, USA Sep 4, 2008 bottle, black color with coffee colored head, malty campfire coffee nose, flavor is an oily smokey tar with some coffee and burnt toast, very nice Nik925 (136), California, USA Sep 2, 2008 2007 bottle. Dark yet thin in both taste and appearance. The smokiness ends up tasting fake to me (like liquid smoke used in cooking). A robust dark brew but the thinness destroys it. Very conservative. Gets better as it warms. paiste2002 (25), Saugus, California, USA Aug 31, 2008 2007 vintage 651ml bottle. Pours black as night with a nice off white head. Great smoky aroma. Taste is complex bittersweet chocolate, coffee, malt, smoked wood, vanilla with a bittersweet smoky finish. This is an incredible beer, I look forward to it every season. Imperial-John (90), Mississauga, Ontario, Canada Aug 28, 2008 651ml 2007 bottle courtesy of HogTownHarry. Black with small foamy tan head. Great hickory smoke alarm setting off aroma. Taste is complex but too mild. Bittersweet, dry, oily, woody, vanilla, malt in the taste. Bittersweet smokey wood after-taste. pepperford (91), robbinsdale, Minnesota, USA Aug 25, 2008 Pitch black like a stout with a medium brown head. Be aggressive with the pour and the head is quite impressive and worth a photo. A bit more carbonation than a stout. Loads of tobacco, chocolate, malt, and a thickness on the mouth feel, that again, teaters on being a stout. Fun beer, unfortunately, i live in bf egypt, so i may never get another chance.
