Syd (770), Waconia, Minnesota, USA Dec 3, 2003 2003 Vintage, bottle pours black and thick. I held it up to a lamp; I saw no light. There was very little head. The aroma was sweet and smoky. The flavor is very nice. Yes, there is the smoky finish, but it is a pleasant culinary smoke, like that of fine smoked salmon. The palate is quite rich and smooth. Overall, this porter puts me at so many fire rings I been around with so many friends in the past. Very good, very nice, I need to order more.
Swolf3 (148), Elkton, Maryland, USA Dec 2, 2008 Bottle shared with Gabe. Aroma is SMOKE! Poured black with nice tan head. Taste? well lets put it this way, I dont think you can get more smoke into a bottle, alon with malt and mild hops. If you enjoy smoked brews this is the one for you. GMCC2181 (504), Bear, Delaware, USA Dec 1, 2008 Bottle from sleazy-eazy E. Aroma of smoke...duh... Good tan head. Taste is like standing in front of a fire and inhaling the smoke, that is as smokey as it gets. Roasted malts, a little coco and hops. Good interpretation of this stlye.. Thanks E for sharing. Haslinger (567), Syracuse, New York, USA Dec 1, 2008 22 ounce bottle from kegbear. 2007. Nice deep dark pour nice malt aroma. Good smoked taste nice lingering smoke finish but not overpowering.I would love to try an aged one of these in the future. poolboy (29), Lafayette, Indiana, USA Nov 29, 2008 I don’t like smoked beer much, but among that variety, this is my favorite. Dark brown with a lighter brown head. Definitely smoked, but the malts and hops can be detected as well. The chocolate is submerged a bit. Probably not for everybody. spikester (460), Salem, Oregon, USA Nov 21, 2008 2008 version.
Black with a good three fingered tan head which subsides to a ring of tan. Plentiful lacings. Aroma is smoked chocolate.
Taste is big dark smoked malts with a good bitter cocoa hop finish. Some smoke in the finish.
Some underlying sweet chocolate makes this an exceptional porter. No wonder this is highly rated. Very nice.
