A vigorous pour leaves only a finger of mocha head atop this nearly black beer. Feeble retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is sweet chocolate with a roasted coffee note to balance it out. Flavor is pretty average, with the same chocolate and coffee as the nose. Finish is dry and roasty. The oats make for some smoothness on the palate, but overcarbonation makes this beer hard to drink or enjoy, unless you’re really into burping.

Sticky and chewy. pretty dark brownish color with short off whitehead. Some noticeable hops on the aroma went along with the roasted malts and chocolate notes.

Sweet mild roast aroma. Black with a tan sliver of a head. Big bodied but the roast flavor is a little lacking. Sweet malts with no hops.

Sample at the Super Terrific Stout Tasting on Feb 16th. This brew is a brownish-black color with a medium light tan head that diminishes steadily. Patches of lacing on the glass. Toasted grain and malt aroma with a bit of coffee. Medium, smooth body with sweet malt, milk chocolate and mild coffee flavors. The finish is creamy and sweet with malt and light hops, and a bit of coffee in the aftertaste. Above average, although if Alaskan applied some of their Smoked Porter prowess to this beer it would be a lot better.

Slender black pour, medium tan head. Malty sweet aroma. Somewhat light chocolate, milky, roasty flavor profile, but overall smooth and well balanced.

Bottle, bought @ YNWA, Kolding.
[vintage 2004]
Pours deep, dark ruby with a fine, large and creamy beige head. Powerfully sweet roasted aroma with some port-tones as well. A bit thin and watery mouthfeel for the type. Flavour equals the roasted feel with a nice, chewy chocolate finish. Still very nice even 2½ years past its sell-by date.

I am always happy to quaff a brew from Alaskan, and have grown to appreciate consistent quality from them. Their Oatmeal Stout is clean and drinkable. The aroma is a welcoming sweet, bready introduction, and the dark color and tan head add to the anticipation. However, I found the taste to be one-dimensional, and was disappointed that it lacked the richness and depth of a fine oatmeal stout (ie Samuel Smith). It was too light and fizzy....seems a bit overcarbonated for style I’m going to take another bottle, let it warm up a bit, do a double pour, and see if it might be a bit more satisfying. As Alaskan says in their ad for this beer,"For a special treat, pour over vanilla ice cream or serve with chocolate." I want my beers to be a special treat on their own.

It’s black with a nice, creamy head. the aroma has notes of roasted malt and a light sourness. The flavour has notes of roasted malt oats, light sweetness, light coffee, sweet licorice and a suitable bitterness. The body is good and rather full. Curtesey of Tom/After4ever - thanks :)
