This receded farily quickly and the lacing is coarse and blocky. The aroma is a very inviting sweet, molassas, chocolate and black licorice. Flavors are similar but a bit more smokey. A bit sour and somewhat dry for a sweet stout. Some hops here and a smooth feel but not particularly thick. Carbonation is quite lively. Finish is a slightly bitter smokey flavor. Coffee, cream, chocolate, black malt in the mouth. Fairly tannic in the mouth. Finishes with black malt. Sven (229), Lancaster, California, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 25, 2004 Beautiful beer. Has the same texture as the pale, which was certainly a surprise. Unfortunately, flavor is not as strong as I’d’ve expected for a stout and doesn’t hold real long either. Hmright (101), Annapolis, Maryland, USA

Inviting, and not as heavy as it seems. sweetness comes out slightly, but dissapears after 3 or 4! motelpogo (4395), Plzen, Czech Republic

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 26, 2004 black as a harley rider’s wardrobe, though the edges give up a bit of dark brown akin to a plug of chewing tobacco. the head wasn’t bad but the bubbles were too big to develop a lappy cream. nose has of course a sweet oatmeal smell, plus the leather seats of a vintage packard, stewed prunes, just a touch of creosote, boar-bristle brush, maduro leaf and kahlua.
the taste is indeed sweet, a baked porridge of bittersweet chocolate in tandem with the kind of burnt cottony bitterness you’d get if you sucked on a welder’s glove. some cherry tones emerge, in a lightly sour way, along with toasty grains misted with chicory and molasses. a fair mid-range stout with a milky consistency and a bitterness that echos all the way to the fridge as you’re fetching your next beer.
