| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 8, 2009 Bottle from Denver. Pitch black foamy brownish head. Somewhat roasty and sweet aroma. Taste is very sweet - almost a little too much so. Very bittersweet chocolate. Not something I could drink a lot of but it is ok. kramer (2489), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | May 7, 2009 12 oz bottle, via 5000. Pours a clear dark brown body with a one finger fizzy light brown head that faded to a wispy film. The nose is roasty and grainy with some dark caramel and lighter coffee notes. The flavor is on the sweeter side with a good deal of caramel and milk chocolate, finishes with a bit of a twang that seems a bit out of place. Not sure I get much of an oat character. Mouthfeel is a bit clingy with a little too much of a fizzy spritzy carbonation level. Finishes with a lingering burnt malt note. Can’t say that I dig this one to much, too much caramel flavor for the style for my tastes. glennmastrange (865), hobe sound, Florida, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 2, 2009 Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of toasted and strong coffee, light herbs and earth for the hops and yeast, with background notes of tar and alcohol. Head is fizzy, light brown, with virtually no lacing but good legs, and is fully diminishing. Color is clear dark brown, almost black. Flavor starts lightly sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes lightly bittersweet and a touch sour. Palate is medium, creamy, has a lively carbonation and finishes sticky on the lips and dry in the mouth. A middle of the road Sweet Stout for me. BlackForestCO (828), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Apr 15, 2009 Bottle shared by Crosling. Poured a deep brown/black color with a thin off-white head that diminished to a ring. Nose is dominated by dark fruit, but not the type I find very appealing in stouts (anise and raisin, mainly) with some hints of chocolate and a faint burn malt. Smooth but thin entry with some light chocolate transitions into a somewhat cloying sweet dark fruitiness comprised of raisin and fig that ends with a lightly dry chalkiness. Low carbonation, and the mouthfeel is thin and dead. Overall, a poor effort by Alaskan. Both the nose and flavor are unbalanced and lean towards cloying sweetness without providing anything to offset it, and the flavor and body both just seemed dead. | 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Apr 14, 2009 Pros: Can’t think of anything specific. It’s not foul.
Cons: Color is a touch light. Nose is vibrant, but doesn’t show any complex malts, or describable character. Really overly sweet and fruity, off balance. Thin mouth feel.
A below average stout. beerchugger (307), Colorado, USA
