ross (1511), charlotte, North Carolina, USA Mar 17, 2006 Well, the store was sold out of Guiness so I just drank this in its place. While this is obviously better than Guiness is, it did not produce the desired effects that I wanted to match my sausge, cabbage, and potatoes. Hey, might as well eat Irish style food on St Pats. Anyway, beer is dark brown, smells of chocolate, malts, some hops, caramel, oatmeal. Tastes similar to all the smells that came from it. Very good, and I can imagine the smoked porter is probably much better than this.
DuffMan (1915), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Aug 17, 2008 Deep dark brown pour. Aromas of burnt caramel, with a banana ester that doesn’t quite seem to fit. a nice flavour profile of chocolate and roasted malt, with a creamy mouthfeel. Decent enough. chokmah33 (100), Bremerton, Washington, USA Aug 15, 2008 Rich espresso and milk chocolate, dark fruits (raspberry, plum) and burnt malts.
Creamy roasted malts, mellow coffee and chocolate. Some mollasses and fruit.
Texture is velvet, very smooth palate. Clean, slightly dry finish. Bradrcr (554), Renton, Washington, USA Aug 8, 2008 8/8/08 From the bottle. Aroma is roast and light black malt dominated by creamy sweetness. Appearance is black with a well maintained cream colored head. Flavor is sweet, creamy malt forward with lots of roast and a sourness in the finish that does not seem to come from the black malt. Mouthfeel is full bodied, with strong grainy texture and medium carb feel. Overall, quite good, and just seems a little light on some of the classic oatmeal creaminess and slickness. AmEricanbrew (907), Left Coast, Louisiana, USA Aug 7, 2008 Dark brown with a tight tan head. Sweet sour toasted oatmeal aroma with black licorice. Medium body. Flavor is again sweet sour black licorice with oat bran and chocolate. A little too much licorice here. Snojerk321 (943), San Diego, California, USA Aug 4, 2008 12oz bottle from BevMo Mission Valley. Pours black with a small beige head that disappears quickly. Nose of dark berry and pit fruits. Flavor was of coffee and toasted malts with some chocolate.
