Commercial Description:
Based on the traditional style of Kölsch beer brewed in Cologne, Germany. Haines Booth Our Crew loves the chance to hook up with Alaskan fans at festivals! Flavor Profile: Alaskan Summer Ale balances a softly malted palate with the clean freshness of Hallertauer hops. In the tradition of the style, neither overpowers the other. Both hops and malt come together to refresh and renew the palate. The straw-gold color and easy drinkability are an enjoyable way to celebrate summer. History: Brewed in our original brewhouse in 1997, this beer is part of our Rough Draft series and has met success with each limited edition release. The enthusiastic reception led the Brew Crew to bring it to the West Coast as a summer seasonal. Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500 square-mile Juneau Ice Field. Crafted from Pale, Munich, Vienna and wheat malts, with Hallertauer hops and our own house yeast.

Another from Skyview. Aroma was wheat and a slight sweet note. Light gold color with a whitehead. Smooth taste: yeast, honey, and a touch of citrus. Not bad, a worthwhile Kolsch.

Take this review with two grains of salt. First, I had it in a plastic cup on an airplane, which takes "improper glassware" to a new low. Second, I was feeling irritated because the flight attendant had said they carried Alaskan Amber, but when I asked for it I got this instead. (Can you do a place review for an airplane? Can you use a negative number to rate the knowledge of the waitstaff?) The appearance and aroma were disturbingly reminiscent of a macro, with a vaguely corn-like quality and a macro-brand of light hoppiness (think Coors Light). The flavor was clean, with a minimum of malt and hop flavors -- I struggled to identify any ale-like qualities. Since I normally don’t drink Kolsches or Summer Ales or whatever you want to call this, I want to be fair, but this beer was all about refreshment and little more, and it wasn’t particularly refreshing. (A good tripel can be very refreshing, and so much more.) I can appreciate that craft brewers may have to expand into more drinkable styles to survivie, but this just goes too far for mre. Not recommended.

Picked up a 12-oz bottle from ABA annual meeting beer swap in Portland, OR. Pours a golden amber brew with a creamy off-white that dissolves to a fine film. Aroma of tart citrus fruits, iced tea, and a touch of honey. Taste is a good balance of sweet and tart fruits, some lemon peel and a hint of yeast. Finish is dry and a tart citrus aftertaste.

Thank you Skyview for hauling this one back. Clear gold color with no head. Aroma of honey and wheat. Orange and citrusy flavor, finished off with a pinch of wheat. Very crisp and clean. Nice.

Thanks to skyview for sharing. super clear golden color with a nice whitish head. Light biscuity nose with a hint of citrus. Nice full carbonated mouthfeel, with an earthy component. Tasty, but not spectacular.

For a summer beer not bad, slight maltiness. A bit of citrus, went down easy on a hot afternoon.

Bottle. Pours clear golden with a small white head. Aroma is mainly light malts and some grain, slightly sweet, with a bit of yeast, citrus, and floral hops. Flavor is semi-sweet grainy malt with a small hops kick and some citrus. Refreshing and crisp while maintaining an interesting set of flavors. Pretty good, especially for the normally underwhelming category of summer seasonals.
