Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

Bottle thanks to Zack. Almost clear and golden in colour with a medium sized head. Interesting but a bit weird. Notes of malt, marmelade, spruce, spices, hops and berries.

Initial flavour of sweet blueberries without a tart aftertaste. A bit of spruce evens out the flavour. The finish is hoppy in an inoffensive manner--good for those who like flavourful beer without a heavy hops taste.

Sample in the Alaskan tap room. This brew pours a hazy, ruddy amber color with a medium thin light beige head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing. Aroma of pine, hops and fruit. Medium-bodied with a piney/spruce (prevents scurvy!) character, along with fresh fruit, hops and malt flavors. Touches of spice are present too. The finish is hoppy and malty with a fruit and spice aftertaste. Decent overall.

Pours reddish amber with a cream colored head. Plenty of lacing. Big bitter flavor with very sweet malts. Spruce tips add and interesting flavor. Pretty well balanced for the type. Abv of 6.4% is well hidden.

2007 version. In the bottle from Seattle Bottleworks. Pours copper with a large off white head. Caramel toffee and butterscotch aroma. Very smooth and very sweet. Has a big strawberry flavor. Medium body, not so thick to the mouth for such a big malt sweetness. Great beer!

This winter ale is right up there with my favorite winter seasonals and in terms of availability and cost, is overall the best. Pours a clear amber with a thin and quickly gone head. There is a muted pine and fruit aroma and the first taste is exquisite with a note of sweet candy with a touch of sourness.
