Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

12oz. bottle. Very clean amber color topped with a minimal head without much staying power. Very sweet, malty flavor. The hops are tangy, but not heavy. Spruce tips are very apparent, but I’ve found this varies slightly from year to year, and in some years, the flavor can be a little cloying. This year, the spruciness seems just about right. Not my favorite winter beer, but very nice.

Bottled. Pours a clear amber colour with no head and very little carbonation. Pleasant aroma of sugar and spice. Flavour is sweet malt and some darker fruits. Finishes with just a touch of warming alcohol.

Murky, still amber appearance with little head. Fruity, hard candy aroma. Very fruity flavor with strawberry dominating. Finishes quick. Little bitterness and it is is on the watery side. I assume the fruity flavor is from the Sitka spruce tips and for that this beer is worth seeking out. Overall not bad.

A nice old ale, though I would think it was a Spice/Herb/Vege ale by the taste of it. This is classic winter beer. Aroma was nice and strongly spiced with some dark fruit in and out. Pour was a deep brown with no head. Taste was very spicy...almost cinnamon with sweet malt and sugary fruit in the aftertaste. Very different, but good.

Very resfreshing beer that keeps you coming back for more sips. Pours a bright amber color into a glass with a good head. Clean flavor with a strong presence of of the spruce tips.

Late 2006 bottling. Amber color with a slight head. Big berry fruit aroma with some caramel and cracker malts. Very smooth texture which holds malt driven flavors of blue, huckleberries and other evergreen brush fruits. Lightly sweet caramel and bread yeast flavors round off this most enjoyable drinking experience. I believe a year plus in the bottle has served this beer well.

3-3-08 bottle.
Clear amber with sudsy white head. Smells a bit generic and doughy with nice metal hints. Strange sweet taste. Palate is boring. Watery. Weak.
