Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

3-3-08 bottle.
Clear amber with sudsy white head. Smells a bit generic and doughy with nice metal hints. Strange sweet taste. Palate is boring. Watery. Weak.

Bottle courtesy of bitterbill. Thanks!
Pours a clear orange to copper color with a thin white head. Smell is mostly malty with some spiced character in the way of the spruce tips, I’m guessing. Taste is malty and refreshingly minty almost and cool feeling in the mouth. Unique mouthfeel and flavor but not particularly fantastic either. Medium to thin bodied and somewhat easy drinking.

Bottle. Pours a light amber with a thin white head that lingers around the glass. The aroma lets you know this beer is unique; pine and berries with malt. The flavor really impressed me with the gentle spruce aspect combined with a nice malty finish. There was also a fruity/berry and floral hops present. A nice beer for anytime. I will have more of these in the future.

You’ve got to give a brewer props for trying something different... and this is definitely that. Copper color with thin white head. Smell of spruce, malt and spices. Taste is malt up front then a moderately sweet caramel and spice finish. For my liking, a good example of a winter ale.

Pours slight head and very orangy color. Slight aroma from the spruce tips when you swirl the glass. Lot smaller than anticipated. Flavor has a nice zip to it. Light hoppy base, but the spruce tips come out very clearly in the aftertaste. Clean palate with a hint of what you’d get if you chewed in a pine tree branch! Would I buy it again? Absolutely!! I usually get a six pack every year, but not more than that. Its a unique Xmas experience.

Darker amber with an interesting aroma of spices and citrus. Taste is spicy and very odd - quite off. I couldn’t figure out what was going on here and didn’t like it much. I’ll stick with their smoked porter.

Clear orange amber with an orange-tinted head that recedes rapidly to a ring. Aroma of gooseberries and blackberries. Soft sweet malts and berry fruit fill the palate, subtle resinous hop note, mildly bitter finish. Interesting and delicious.
