Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

Nose of heavy sweet malts. The overall flavor was almost that of a sweet or milk stout. Very malty, and as someone mentioned, a hint of mint. This is a bit of an oddball for an old ale, but decent enough. Very little hops that I noticed, and a thick mouthfeel. Really I just drank this and thought I’d rather have a milk stout, but it was a good beer. It gets docked points not because it isn’t good, but because of the company it has to compete with in this style.

light copper color with medium khaki colored head. clean pine and caramel malt aroma. medium lightly chewy body. toffee malt and bread flavor with pine, mint, and a little bitter orange. interesting, fairly unique, and works as a winter warmer because i don’t know how many you would want to drink

12 ozer at a friend’s party. This was tasty and had some nice spruce notes in it. Is it an old ale? In my opinion no its not an old ale if I was rating it that way it would get a much lower score, objectively overall this was good.

12 oz. bottle with trade from Snojerk321-poured into stein. Poured transparent slightly darken amber, modest carbonation, white ring for a head. Aroma of hops, malt, spices- very earthy. Hits the mouth with a medium defined body, kinda has a tree quality to it in terms of taste (hard pine), finish leaves you wanting for more. Very drinkable.

Bottle. Pours light amber with decent off-white head that doesn’t linger too long. Aroma is sweet and floral with some spice, but not powerful or complex. Flavor is pine, and very sweet. Decent hop finish, but kind of bland for a winter warmer. Not one of my favorites, but may rerate. Alcohol content is well hidden.

Bottle: Dark, golden colored pour with medium sized head. Spicy, sweet, floral aroma. Sweet, piney flavor. I’m not big on the pine flavor, but this was pretty damn good.

Bottle. Poured a clear light copper color with a thin wispy white head. Very light caramel, malt, and minty hop aroma. Light hops and caramel-maltiness to start, with a mild spuce presence that gives a nice finish along with the hops. Overall, a pretty mild brew, but easy drinking.

12 oz. bottle from John Bryan, who received it directly from the Alaskan brewers when they visited Boulevard brewery. Pour is clear straw gold with a big off white head. Pretty pour. Aroma of some sweet maltiness and some bright, earthy hoppiness. Taste is interesting, fair amount of sweet caramel malt, with the piney (spruce tip) essence. This taste is really varied, I taste amber ale, lager, Marzen all kinds of stuff going on. Nice, silky palate, nice bitterness to the finish. Thanks again for this one John.
