Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

Bottle courtesy of theisti (via John Bryan of Boulevard Brewing). Pours iced tea brown with a thin, rapidly diminishing off-white head. The aroma is a pleasant spicy, toasted malt. I detect notes of pale and Munich along with evergreen/spruce and lightly spicy noble hops. Light to medium-bodied with assertive, yet soft carbonation and a crisp, clean finish. The flavor is an interesting combination of Munich and pale malt, light spruce and caramel, ending with a crisp, clean finish. This is what I would imagine you’d get if you created a hybrid of a marzen, a pilsner and an underhopped pale ale. Uniquely tasty and quite drinkable, if this was sold locally, I’d probably buy a sixer or two every winter. Thanks again for sharing this one with me, Tim.

Pours a four finger cream head that fades quickly to a thin layer leaving some lace. Nice crystal clear amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Slight hoppy nose, no spruce. Flavor is sweet caramel that balances the slight bitterness at the finish. $1.35 for a 12oz bottle from Liquid Solutions Oregon City, Or.

More of a "strong amber" than an "old," if I had to say in a hypothetical blind-taste. A bit of a tinge of metallicatistity.

Listening: Wilco, Summerteeth

Appearance: Pours a clear, orange-gold body with a wispy cream head. Smell: sweet maltiness. Taste: Bready maltiness with a candylike sweetness. Hints of orange, pretty light in terms of spruce character. Sweet finish. Mouthfeel: Medium body. Medium carbonation.

~Pours into a clear, copper colour with lille to no head. ~Smells sweet like molasses. Faint aroma. I could smell a hint of spruce/pine when I smell the inside edge of the glass.~ Has a sweet malt flavour with a bittersweet aftertaste.~ Has a medium feel. Decent beer. Would like to try again, but wouldn’t purchase it. Too malty sweet for me.

Bottle. Clear amber pour, thin white head. Subtle aroma of caramel malt, sugar, and fruit. Pleasant malty flavor, very smooth and mostly sweet. Good, slightly creamy palate. Some malt and crisp hops linger in the finish.

Draft. Copper color with minimal head retention and no lacing. Aroma of sweet candied malt with a touch of spice, although not clearly that of spruce tips. The flavor is very well balanced with malt dominating the flavor profile. Medium body with slight warming effect.
