Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

Bottle. The Sitka spruce aroma really comes through and a whiff of sweetness too. Clear Copper color. I find the brew on the lighter side. The malt component is actually tamer as I expected. This is the third I have tried of the spruce tips variety. It is not bad at all.

This one is a winner, and that might be because it appears to be a clone of another winner, Alba Scot ale. Spiced aroma. Flavor has lots of pine and medium sweet malt, but not perceivable hops and that is OK. Alcohol seems low for an old ale, maybe a spiced beer instead.

Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at John’s Marketplace in Portland, Oregon. Pours a semi-hazy copper amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white head. Aroma of caramel malt, spruce, some dark berries and a touch of spice. Taste is medium bodied, lightly carbonated , smooth creamy with flavors of caramel malt, raspberries and spruce hops. Taste is semi-sweet, dry character with a nice malt and berry aftertaste.

2006 vintage. Thanks to Skyview. Copper color with no head. Slightly spicy yeast aroma and some malt. A very spicy spruce flavor and a sweet malt base. Very similar to Alba Scots Pine. Tasty and well worth the search for it.

Thanks to Skyview for sharing. Pours a nice burnt auburnish orange color. Nice almost apple like aroma with a hint of spice and a little ripe fruit. Nice Full creamy mouthfeel with a good dose of ripe rasberry and a good dose of floral hoppiness. Great beer!

Bottle. Poured red with foamy white head. Malty aroma. Full body, with malt and raspberry notes, Tiny bit of spruciness. Lingering raspberry finish with a hoppy tang. Because of the spruce, I had’nt expected to like this. Surprisingly I do

12 oz bottle from Vons. Winter 2007 release. Poured a rich copper color with an off white head that faded to 1/8 inch. Aroma was light with sweet malts, red fruits and almonds. The flavor was rich with malts and a large dosing of cherries and raspberries. Mouthfeel was very full, creamy and heavy. This is a beer you can almost chew. The finish fell short and showed just a trace of piney hops and some alcohol, but thankfully their was no lingering sweetness (which I had anticipated by this point). Overall: this is a most pleasantly original brew--my congrats to Alaskan. Recommended.

In my opinion this is a great example of a Scottish Gruit. The commercial description says English Olde Ale, but to me it is Scottish. Here is my review: AROMA - Some fruity-malt notes. Very crisp smelling; APPEARANCE - Medium amber in color. Faint head at the start that quickly fades. No real carbonation, and lacing is minimal; TASTE - The taste is that of a typical Scottish Gruit. The base flavor is malt, then the fruity bitterness of the spruce tips adds a nice roundness to the pallete; MOUTHFEEL - Mouthfeel is pleasant with roasted malty tones. No carbonation bite either; OVERALL - I really liked this brew. Beings that it is a limited release seasonally. If you see it, pick it up...dman fine brew.
