Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

12 oz bottle from Vons. Winter 2007 release. Poured a rich copper color with an off white head that faded to 1/8 inch. Aroma was light with sweet malts, red fruits and almonds. The flavor was rich with malts and a large dosing of cherries and raspberries. Mouthfeel was very full, creamy and heavy. This is a beer you can almost chew. The finish fell short and showed just a trace of piney hops and some alcohol, but thankfully their was no lingering sweetness (which I had anticipated by this point). Overall: this is a most pleasantly original brew--my congrats to Alaskan. Recommended.

In my opinion this is a great example of a Scottish Gruit. The commercial description says English Olde Ale, but to me it is Scottish. Here is my review: AROMA - Some fruity-malt notes. Very crisp smelling; APPEARANCE - Medium amber in color. Faint head at the start that quickly fades. No real carbonation, and lacing is minimal; TASTE - The taste is that of a typical Scottish Gruit. The base flavor is malt, then the fruity bitterness of the spruce tips adds a nice roundness to the pallete; MOUTHFEEL - Mouthfeel is pleasant with roasted malty tones. No carbonation bite either; OVERALL - I really liked this brew. Beings that it is a limited release seasonally. If you see it, pick it up...dman fine brew.

Had this beer june 2007. Aroma is very faint with just a wif of malt. Color is a medium golden brown with very light carbonation and a fair tight head. Taste is light but sweet. Starting with light/medium body it goes down crisp. Finish is a sweet malt flavor backed by an easy yet crisp bitterness. I don’t taste any pine or spruce but there seems to be an after taste in the far back that has a hint of mint. Its just a bit light for a Winter but it is a very drinkable beer.

I guess they can get points for creativity. Good looking amber body, small white head, moderate to light lacing. Some floral hops, some sweet malts and caramel in the nose. Taste of sweeet malts and caramel, but overwhelming sense of evergreen sap, menthol, and cheesy skunky hops. Maybe too old? Maybe a really don’t like spruce tips in the beer? Nasty taste won’t go away. Strnage mouth feel ... again the sap? Ugh.

A super sweet malty aroma with a hint of some spices. It actually smells like sweet oranges to me. Pours orange with a beige head. Flavor is like sweet oranges too. Very malty. This beer has a little bit of spice as well. Pretty heavy mouthfeel. This was the third beer I had that day and it was definitley heavier on the palate than two APA’s.

From the bottle this pours a dull copper body with lively carbonation and a short-lived ecru head. It smells of caramel with a splash of alcohol and a hint of pine. The pine increases in the flavor. The caramel sweetness and pine are joined by light toast and black pepper. The finish is a warm spiciness on the tongue with a piney coolness filling the mouth. Not bad.

Bottle: Pours a light copper color with a white head. Aroma, caramel, some boozy notes, pale malts, some pine, and spices. Flavor, caramel, pale malts, toasted notes, floral, spice, some hints of pine. Smooth well carbonated, with a medium body. Good stuff.
