Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

My least favorite of the Ak brews but still likable. It is a complex blend of fruit and pine but somewhat varies from batch to batch.

From IrishBoy! 12oz bottle, A031007. nice copper/amber color. sugary aroma with a hint of vanilla. flavor of a sweet berry pie with pecans. Amazing finish! medium bodied and great complex mouthfeel of flavors. Hints of spruce. Very niice.

(Bottle via trade with <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=3 target=blank>IrishBoy, thanks Richard!) A nice change of pace, a little sweet and hoppy with a spicy quality...Pours clear slightly reddish gold/amber with about one finger of off-white head that recedes to a small covering that stays. Aroma quite sweet - a little candyish, caramel and vanilla perhaps. Mouthfeel fairly smooth, actually a touch sticky in finish. Some pretty nice rings and webs of light lacing. Flavor has a light-medium bitter quality overlaying some light candyish malt sweetness finishing with the sprucy taste. Pretty well-balanced. Doesn’t remind me of any other old ales I’ve had, seems like more of a spice beer or strong ale.

12oz bottle via trade with Larry Pitonka. Aroma: Was expecting a bunch of spruce tips after reading the description, but found none. Light caramel and fruit (peach and apple). Some floral and light earthy hops. Appearance: Deep amber in color and clear. Off-white head was full and foamy with decent retention. Fair lacing. Flavor: Grainy maltiness, Light fruit (apple and raisins), pine, floral, and earthy hops. Medium-low bitterness. Some sweetness lingers past the finish. Palate: Medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. Overall: A little disappointing. Light bodied and no alcohol warming for an Old Ale. Spruce was nonexistant.

Pretty good brew. Not one of the best old ales I have tried, but decent enough. Lot’s of florally hops in the nose, a little lighter on the taste. Crisp finish.

A nice winter brew. Its not a true winter brew as I thought it would be darker and more hoppy. This is more of an amber ale. The aroma is nice with a bunch of hops. Head is nice and thick. A nice beer but not a true winter brew

An intereting--and pleasing--topnote of huckelberry or boysenberry. Fades to an exceptionally mild malty sweetness. Then fades to nada. Pleasingly drinkable. Utterly forgettable. (I recall the sprice tips from prior vintages; absolutely none this year.)
