Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

A nice winter brew. Its not a true winter brew as I thought it would be darker and more hoppy. This is more of an amber ale. The aroma is nice with a bunch of hops. Head is nice and thick. A nice beer but not a true winter brew

An intereting--and pleasing--topnote of huckelberry or boysenberry. Fades to an exceptionally mild malty sweetness. Then fades to nada. Pleasingly drinkable. Utterly forgettable. (I recall the sprice tips from prior vintages; absolutely none this year.)

Bottle in trade. Pours a rich amber color with barely a bit of head. Kind of expecting a bit more aroma here as there was a bit of caramel fruit but spruce tips?? I dont think so. Anyway,it wasn’t a bad beeer rather very run-of-the-mill in the style.

Another good Winter Ale. Nice and hoppy. Also a rich malt taste with a hint of sweet Spruce Tips. Not a beer that you want to drink one after another, it’s a little to robust to do that. Wonderful dark Amber color with a quickly fading head.

Draft at The Yard House in Phoenix, AZ. Clear copper orange color with two fingers of white head that didn’t really leave any lace. Malty aroma with molasses and cherry. Slightly sweet on the tongue with a full bodied mouth feel. There is some fruity raisin and cherry, but the flavor is dominated by malt with molasses and chocolate notes.

Pours a very clear reddish amber, briefly topped by a thin cap of off white foam. Before I sniff it and take a sip, the foam reduses to a thin ring and a slight film. Scant lacing. Lightly fruity aroma, a little on the sweet side, with a trace of wood smoke. Dry earthy and grainy mild malt flavor, with a little bit of fruit, spice, and a bit of leather. Good balance with a residual spicy hop bitterness in the finish. The label says that the beer is brewed with spruce tips, but I detect none. Medium body, moderate soft carbonation. Smooth and drinkable.
