Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

Pint on tap at the Graduate in Davis, CA. Light, grainy, biscuity, light earthy hops present in the nose. THere are also some faint peppery hops present as well. Is this an ESB? Transparent copper colored body with a smallish cream-colored head. Strange, spicy, celery seed flavors to start. Floral, fruity middle. Did they use lavendar or heather or something in this? This is super floral. Light roasty maltiness later on which is also joined by some spicy hop bitterness. Thin, strange, and I am not a big fan. Now that I see this is supposedly an Old Ale, I am shocked.

Overall of the winter ales I have tried recently this one really blows. It is boring, no real flavor, tastes a little like a lager and it doesn’t even have a cool looking label. All in all this beer should be left on the shelf to collect dust.

12-oz. Pours a medium, clear amber with a tallish, moussy platinum blonde head. Bready nose with not much else going (is it my night for the bland leading the bland tonight or what?). Moderately assertive attack; medium body, hints of carb, somewhat forward flavors. The most striking--and perplexing--thing about this beer is the cherry note. It’s there on the mid palate and the finish. There’s the crackery breadiness of two row in there, and then the sweet cherry gumminess that must be the spruce. Alcohol is not as pronounced as the commercial description might lead you to believe.

this is an okay beer, alaskan is just a "run of the mill" micro if you ask me. nothing really special, drank beside a full sail wassail which was MUCH better, and its not a high-flyer.

Clear dark golden. Slightly spicy aroma. Very sweet taste with tons of floral/fruity character. Hops lend a nice pilsner aspect to it. Big fan of the taste....all other aspects where a bit lacking though, especially the aroma. Def. didn’t match the taste.
