Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

Bottle poured a dark copper with a good off white head. Aroma of malt and hops. Flavor is sweet malt, spice and a light metalic flavor in the background. Light sweet alcohol finish.

Bottle (Courtesy of FlacoAlto): Poured a clear deep amber color ale with a nice white bubbly head with average retention. Aroma of sweet malt with a subtle mix of spices. Taste is a mix between sweet malt and a subtle mix of spices. Body is a bit thin and I can’t say that I really tasted the spruce tips. I believe I would have appreciated this better with a stronger presence of spices.

12 oz bottle purchased as a single at Whole Foods. Pours clear orange-amber with a thin white head. Delicious fruity malt aroma with maple, vanilla and a hint of spice. Flavor is very sweet, toasty, fruity malts with pepper and spice - kind of reminiscent of a fruit cake - and becomes a bit cloying as it warms. Medium body and pricly carbonation.

Nice looking Copper Orange with a mild sweet nose. Not tasting any spurce or pine. However this has a nontart raspberry flavor. Feels good and I like it.

I liked this one, quite hoppy, with some nice spiciness to it. Easy drinking. Copper color, nothing really dominates this one, good to drink!

I couldn’t detect much aroma. Nice copper color. Spicey sweet malt flavor. Light body with a light head. Very good beer, but I don’t think I could drink more than a couple at one time.

From the bottle

Pours a clear dark orange with a limited head.

Aroma is piney hops and an unmistakable hint of spruce; the flavor is a good balance of warm toasted malt with fruity hops, accented by the spruce. Mouthfeel is good, finish is dry but not powerfully so.

Bottle, 2005 version. Pleasant hoppy spiced pine aromas. Good balance of malt and hops, spices and hints of spruce. Mouthfeel was light to medium, not a lot of warming, actually somewhat refreshing. A very nice enjoyable ale.
