Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

The aroma is quite good. Lots of bubblegum, chocolate, spruce, and caramel. The apperance is a light copper color. The thin palate is my only real complaint with this beer. The flavor is lemons, cinammon, cloves, and caramel. Its simple yet complex if that makes sense. I enjoyed it.

Clear copper under a thin white head with very little lacing. Nothing too bold in the aroma but there is a definate pine forrest element and a touch of vanilla. Very clean and refreshing flavor with sweet malt, pine (spruce), and the slightest hint of citrus. The spruce hips really make this a great tasting and very unique beer. Nothing like any winter brew I’ve ever tasted. The mouthfeel was a bit thin. Other than that, the only thing I would have liked to see (taste) would be more spruce - bolder would have been a little better. Overall, this was a great tasting beer and I’m pretty lucky to have a buddy in Alaska, otherwise, I’m sure I would never have tasted one of these.

What a crazy taste! The spruce tips are definitely part of this beer’s flavor profile in a big way. At first taste, you think it’s the malt that’s just plain weird - sort of sweetish, yet piney. After a fewe sips, I concluded there’s only one thing possibly making this brew taste so odd (again, in sort of a licorishy, piney way). It’s the SPRUCE! Yet this beer is utterly unlike the Alba Pine Ale I once had, which was not unlike drinking a liquefied Christmas tree. Nice sweet malt aroma, too. I give Alaskan Brewing some credit for originality here.

This is a really great winter brew, its odd because I’ve had it before but don’t recall liking this that much. The buttery sweet caramel mixed with the spruce tips really gives this winter warmer a unique taste. Perfectly balance and very smooth. Pours a copper/amber with a thin head. The spicing is subtle under all the spruce.

thanks to batkins for this one It kind of surprised me w/ its amber color & light body. I was expecting (but hadn’t read any reviews first) more of a winter warmer. This beer has some fruitiness (cider like) w/ mild carbonation. I’d think that this would be a good beer to have a big meal, say turkey dinner.

Pours transparent amber with small yellow head that diminishes quickly. Aroma is slightly fruity, berry-like and malty. Flavor is simple, but somewhat unnaturally sweet. Slightly carbonated. Slightly bitter finish. Good alcohol kick and easy to drink. Not much in terms of spices, but is a simple and easy to drink winter ale.

not a bad winter brew, pours a amber color with a slight reddish heuw, taste much like a german style winter beer, with added malts and some american hop presence, not bad at all, very refreshing with decent alcohol content.
