I was expecting to notice the spruce in this, but even forewarned I can’t say that I can detect it. Poured flat with no head. Amber coloured and clear. Light hops and malt in the aroma. Tastes very sweet, so much so as to mask whatever else is going on in the flavour department. FlacoAlto (2482), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jun 26, 2004 Brewed with Sitka spruce tips. The aroma is slightly citrusy, with a spicy component to it. I tasted this just after smelling some fresh Sitka spruce tips, the aromas of the fresh tips were incredibly citrusy with a sweet aroma that was incredibly fresh and interesting. Unfortunately the beer did not have this level of character to it, but at least it was noticeable in the nose.
The taste has a definite slight bitterness and astringency that does not seem to be derived from the use of hops (so it must be the spruce). The beer is sweet and malty up front with a light refreshing citrus character. This is quite light and refreshing to the palate, though there is some solid flavor here, including some spiciness. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 22, 2004 Clear golden with good head but no lacing. Sweet malty nose. Sweet malt and slight spuce taste. Thin in body with a dry finish. I can taste the spruce in the finish too. Not bad but not my cup of tea. brewshthereen (316), Oregon, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 22, 2004 This is somewhat of a let down. Extremely average offering. Mildly hoppy with sweet toasted malt. Some holiday spices. To thickishly sweet for my taste. Watery and thin. Slighty dry finish. Overall, not to bad, but could be better. leon919 (10), San Jose, California, USA

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 13, 2004 Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is clear medium amber. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted bread, cookie), lightly hoppy (grapefruit), with notes of spruce/pine needles and orange. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. chriso (4852), London, Greater London, England
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Mar 16, 2004 Spruce tips? I expected something resinous, like retsina, but it certainly isn't that. Very odd pinkish amber colour, a bit like campari. The aroma certainly does have an herbaceous aspect, but its mainly sweet marshmallow and pear drops with a whiff of alcohol. There is a hint of something piney in the flavour but a soft jammy sweetness dominates. No hops in evidence at all, but an aromatic woody bitterness, reminiscent of angostura does appear in the finish. Overall, though, not enough grip and far too sickly for me. Not my cup of tea at all. An extra point for the novelty though. Mine was 6% bay the way. 355ml bottle (not bottled conditioned - best before 31 July 2004) from beersofeurope.co.uk

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 22, 2004 Bottled. Deep amber coloured beer with a smooth white head. Alcohol is prominent on the nose but doesn’t necessarily translate through to the flavour or palate. Rich sweet malts control this beer something along the lines of the Fullers Vintage ales.
