Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

Sunrise-amber with pookfy head. Soothing aroma of malts, caramel, and spices, fruit and spruce. Wellbalanced body. Tasty blend of malts giving a nice variety within a medium spectrum, accented by caramel malt. Some warming spruce and spice with lingering hop fruitiness. A fabulous, sessionable Old Ale.

Pours a clear medium amber with a modest head. Aroma is typical of a contemporary American strong ale. Flavor is pretty sweet, and the purported floral essence really comes through toward the end. That, I’m guessing, is the spruce tips. I like them, as they make the flavor marginally different than most other ales. Flower nectar, those are the words I’ll use to describe that unique flavor in the finish. Overall, not amazing but very good.

Pours a dark amber with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of spruce, and pine. Flavor is slightly hoppy, with spruce and caramel sweetness.

12oz bottle courtesy of Unclejedi, thanks! nice golden color with teh strangest aroma of what I take must be spruce. Its like pine mixed with licorice, huh? The flavor is also strange but surprisingly good. The flavor is very hard to describe as I have not tasted anything like it but weak licorice comes to mind and a hint of malt. This was interesting and very easy to drink. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-23-2008 02:16:22

Pouring mostly clear and dark amber in color, the body is crowned with a fleeting, frothy head of cream colored foam. Minimal, spotty lacing marks the glass. Mundane overall, the aroma shows notes of sweet, toasted biscuit malts, dry cereal grains, floral spruce, and mild winter spices. Flavors follow suit, spicy floral hops and wintery spruce balancing the lightly caramelized biscuit sweetness. Relatively light bodied and balanced, what it lacks in substance it gains in sessionability. Decent, drinkable brew here, but it’s more S/H/V than old ale, and even at that it doesn’t really impress.

A decent winter ale. Pours a dark color with a decent head. Flavor is sweet from the pine sprigs which add a unique level to the beer. It’s a bit malty and the hopps are not too noticeable.
