Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

Pouring mostly clear and dark amber in color, the body is crowned with a fleeting, frothy head of cream colored foam. Minimal, spotty lacing marks the glass. Mundane overall, the aroma shows notes of sweet, toasted biscuit malts, dry cereal grains, floral spruce, and mild winter spices. Flavors follow suit, spicy floral hops and wintery spruce balancing the lightly caramelized biscuit sweetness. Relatively light bodied and balanced, what it lacks in substance it gains in sessionability. Decent, drinkable brew here, but it’s more S/H/V than old ale, and even at that it doesn’t really impress.

A decent winter ale. Pours a dark color with a decent head. Flavor is sweet from the pine sprigs which add a unique level to the beer. It’s a bit malty and the hopps are not too noticeable.

Bottle from Bottleworks. Not much smell going on. pours a dark gold, with a foamy cream head. A bit sour.

Aroma and flavor were a bit skanky, with the flavor developing a complexity of malts, earth and hops. Although strange at first, the spruce tips did add a nice piny dimension. Mouthfeel was pleasant. Finish was bitter but changed to a metallic taste. I’ll finish the bottle but probably won’t buy any more.

Pine sugar nose with flowers. Deep amber color, smallish head. Candied lavender sweetness, mild but proper bitterness, excellent balance. Solid carbonation, medium body, floral nutty finish. This is an elegant yet bold beer. The spruce adds something special

12oz bottle pours amber with an off white head. Decent retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet malts honey and some caramel. Flavors of caramel malt, some fruitiness, not much bitterness happening. Palate is a bit creamy yet boring. Overall decent but nothing to get excited over.

10/15/08 From the bottle. Aroma is malty, caramel sweet, slightly alcoholic, with a faint fresh hop aroma. Appearance is clear gold with a well maintained white head. Flavor is sweet yet highly earthy with slightly sour caramel malt forward. The bittering is hard to describe (and therefore the flavor), but stays with you from the tip of your tongue to finish, but is never very strong nor harsh. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly warm, with a medium carb feel. Overall, a cool and different brew that carries a lot of flavor without the heaviness that would stop you from having more than one.

Pours amber with foamy white head. Nose of sweet bread and grains. Flavors are very sweet, green apple, lacks bitterness, too sweet, some wintery earthy spruce notes but this is too sweet and no malt complexities to enjoy here.
