Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

Nice and malty with good warming ABV. Spruce definitely is detectable and gives a nice perfumy addition to the aroma.

12oz bottle. Orange color with a lasting head. Malty, toffeeish aroma with some spruce and light hops. Thick, malty body with caramel, toffee, and a minty spruce flavor. Full bodied and smooth. This is pretty cool, though maybe thats just the novelty of the spruce talking. Now I have too seek more of these northern creations out.

Little body. Slightly spiced. Bit of the Old Ale to it, but nothing like Avery or Great Divide. A fairly mediocre winter beer.

Bomber poured a clear copper with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of spruce, mint, carmel and light fruittiness. Palate was light to medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of spruce, carmel, light fruittiness and a hint of spice with a smooth lingering spruce/fruity finish.

650 ml. bottle. Pours a thickish head with poor duration and minimal lacing, over a clear coppery gold body....nose of mild hop florality with some fruit especially raspberry....taste of soft malts then mild hop bittering, finishing with raspberry. Pleasant and refreshing, rather lighter than expected mouth feel, especially as it is a winter ale. However it is a nice spruce beer. 12/05/2008

Clear copper pour with a small head that fizzes away quickly. Aroma of malt and citrus. Sweet malty fruit flavor with just a hint of spice and hops. Alright.

Draft. Pours copper with a white head. Strong orange smells. Good orange flavors, a pine aftertaste. Very clean and crisp.

Pours a nice clear copper, smells piney and earthy. tastes the same, kind of minty, finishes clean with a little bit of alcohol warmth. VERY similar to anderson valley’s winter solstice. not bad, but not what i was expecting. too much carmel sweetness.
