Commercial Description:
Style: English Olde Ale. Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers.

Flavor Profile: Brewed in the style of an English Olde Ale, this ale balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol.

History: From the seafaring adventurers of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. The tender new growth of Sitka spruce tips lends a delicious, yet subtly sweet floral aroma to tea, jelly and now Alaskan Winter Ale.

Ingredients: Water, malt, hops and yeast with no adjuncts, no preservatives and no pasteurization. Our glacier-fed water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field. A complex blend of six malts including Pale, Wheat, Munich and caramelized malts. Prized Czechoslovakian Saaz hops and Sitka spruce tips.

Peachy amber, lots of bubbles, small head. Aromas of toasted malt, earthy hops and spruce. Palate is creamy and smooth, with plenty of evergreen, spice, and caramel. It will be quite tasty on a cold winter night.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful bright amber with visible rising bubbles. After the initial pour, there was a decent size white head, that eventually dissapates to a 1/8 inch layer of creamy white froth. Aroma: A little hop spice, a little dry malt, some brown sugar and a little bit of pine. I say little because all those objects can be found, but in moderate doses. Taste: Chocolate, spicy hop bitterness, spicy malt, slight berry twang that finishes with a definite spruce tip note. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, with a lingering semi sweet aftertaste. Overall: Judging the book by its cover, I thought this beer was going to be boring. I know, its a horrible thing to do. With that said, this beer was super balanced, and really flavorful. The spruce tips turn it from a plane Jane Old Ale or English Strong Ale to a really nice Winter Warmer.

Bottled. An amber color and clear with off-white head. Aroma is caramel and sweet. Flavor is also sweet caramel, wood and spice. Finish is bitter...alright but nothing to look forward to.

Pours a medium amber color with a good amount of carbonation though not much retention. Spruce definitely noticeable on the nose and it helps ot make the beer very smooth. It has a finish almost tasting like cotton candy. Has a good amount of mouthfeel.

Poured a clear orange with a small white head. The head disappeared pertty quickly. Aroma is sweet toasty malts with a bit of earthy, grassy hops. Flavor is similar with some toffee sweetness. The spruce was so muted that I might not have noticed it if I hadn’t been looking for it. It seems like the flavor got lost in the sweetness. I like the flavor of pine and spruce needles, so I was hoping it would have a strong presence. This is not a bad beer, and I’m going to have no trouble finishing my six pack, but it’s not very interesting.

I like piny tastes in my beer, but this was more like chewing on the needles. Overall a decent beer that was ruined for me by the excess of spruce tips.

Medium amber, off-white head. Lots of malt, sweetness nicely balanced by the light hop kick and piney notes provided by the spruce.

A suitable warmer, though not as strong as you’d expect an olde to be, and I didn’t think the spruce showed up as strongly as some reviewers did, either, though I would’ve welcomed it. Not bad.
