Commercial Description:
Bright copper color, sparkling clarity, and good foam retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Deep toasty/caramelly malt balanced by spicy/fruity hop flavors accented by fruit esters resulting from fermentation with a championship yeast strain. The aroma is subtle and reflects the flavor with malt, hop and fruit (ester)/fermentation characteristics. Smooth, medium-bodied. Easy drinking with no harsh or astringent sensations.

Everything down to the incredible head on this beer seems as if it was scientifically designed by the brewer. When I drink and AleSmith beer I often think of a small brew pub (no longer with us) from Pittsburgh, PA who’s saying was "we may brew a bad beer, but you will never taste it". I envision AleSmith dumping every drop of sub standard beer before it would have a chance to hit your mouth. If they are out of supply I don’t question it. Quality comes before profit. Can you tell I like this brewery (and beer)?

Bottle. Poured a rusty, musty orange with a lofty, poofy foamy head that stuck to the glass like sticky glue. the aroma teased with all kinds of possibilities ... big malt, woodsy pine, even some spice. The flavor isn’t immediately as complex, instead being primarily full bodied roast malt. The earthy hoppiness adds only a subtle flavor component, but seems to contribute tot he overall outdoorsiness of it all. Quite good. (#3381, 4/7/2008)

pours dark caramel with rich thick head. hopy aroma. smooth mouth feel. medium hops slightly bitter but not overpowering. subtle malt aftertaste. It tastes like beer. I don’t feel like I had an anvil dropped on me, maybe that comes in the morning? 22oz bottle.

2007 Bottle 22oz. - Almost impossible to pour because it is incredibly carbonated. I got a huge head and needed to let it rest. The nose is all malts and the flavor (once you get past the bubbles) is all toast, caramel and chocolate. My disappointment is that it gets very thin right about here. There is a slight residual presence, but it is fleeting. This is definitely not the premier Alesmith brew or even a very good bitter, but drinkable none the less...

22oz Bottle. Pours a dark orange with a small one finger head. Spicy hops with a sweet malt nose. Taste is bitter metallic hops. Little bit of caramel, biscuit and toffee notes as it warms up. Nothing special but holds it own.

Fairly nice ESB. Pours a dark copper with a small head and tight lacing. Aroma of hops and some malt. Nothing exceptional there. Taste is sharp with spicy hops. I would have rated it higher if the taste didn’t drop off so suddenly.

Bottle. Clear brownish-orange with a bubbly white head that dissipates. Clean citrus hops aroma. Flavor of citrus hops and a bit of malt. Nicely bitter, but it doesn’t linger. Quite tasty and drinkable.
