I wanted a 5.0, and this is not that good. Expectations outweigh substance. Flavor is malty, a little cloying. Nice, I’d drink 4 more, but I wouldn’t go to the ends of the earth to get it like I wouldve yesterday. Rockinout (945), Kent, Ohio, USA

Big, roasty, black, bold, anise, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, warming, creamy full mouthfeel, full-bodied. Finishes dry, somewhat bitter coffee. All these flavors blend together so well. fidel (944), Livermore, California, USA

| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Oct 5, 2008 2006 bottle shared at fordest’s tasting. Poured a viscous black with a tan head that had good retention. The aroma was of molasses, coffee, oak and whiskey. The flavor was similar to the nose with some smooth vanilla tossed in. This beer is remarkable due to the mellowness of the flavors; regular speedway is a ferocious tiger, but this is more of a laid back fat cat. As such, the first sip was a bit anti-climatic, but as I sipped it grew in complexity and character. Molasses, dates, mocha and bourbon. The mouthfeel was similar to he Westy 12. The finish was long with mellow whiskey. Overall: A great brew. loweredsixth (942), Fresno, California, USA
| 5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Nov 28, 2003 Updated: Dec 9, 20032002 Vintage - Bottle #44 of 115: Sampled from 53 deg F to 61 deg F. I shared this bottle with my wife, flutetokill. Pitch black color with a small light brown head. The aroma was very decadent...sweet bourbon, licorice, dark chocolate, cherry. The flavor was huge (like everything else about this beer) with tons of chocolate, coffee, bourbon, sweet fruits, and licorice. The aftertaste is a strong licorice tone with warming alcohol in the throat. The feel was very soft, smooth, thick, oily, and sticky. One of the biggest differences between this and the regular Speedway Stout is that you don't have that crispness here...it works much better. This is the first beer that I've had that seemed perfectly complete, well thought out, and masterfully crafted. It was a completely pleasurable experience. So hard to see how it relates to the regular Speedway because the coffee is eliminated by the barrel. I personally like it, and the highly oaky and vanilla-laden nose gives way to a full, fig-laden palatte. No real sugar happens in the taste which made it seem to me like a quad.
