So much going on in this baby. Bourbon, toasted nuts, coffee, chocolate, dark fruits, oak and alcohol. Aroma and flavor is the about the same. Huge full bodied brew which in my book is an instant classic. Just freakin amazing... DrunkAsASkunk (847), Lynnwood, Washington, USA

Oh my god....oh my god... I have seen the dark and it is good. I bow to thee...I kneel to thee oh great bearer of this bountiful substance. It pours a vile blackened thing with little head..of what is there orangey froth clings to glass. The aroma is that of bourbon, coffee and thick enchanting chocolates. The beer is bold and syrupy...a coffee lovers paradise. Wonderful mouth tingling choco-malts...hardly ANY alcohol presence..but a slight sense of aged woodiness. This could potentially rival the top beer on my list. Shag (1923), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA

Apperance is pitch black with almost no head,. I taste all kinds of stuff in this like vanilla, cherries, chocolate, coffee, etc etc. The aftertaste is somewhat sticky. Thanks for sharing the bottle DaSilky and Iceman! BrianO (138), Ambler, Pennsylvania, USA

This is one of those beers that once you drink this, all the beers the remainder of the night won't quite compare. Pours dark with small brown head. Aroma and flavor is chocolate, coffee, alcohol, and bourbon. Palate couldn't be better. Creamy, full-bodied, thick but not motor-oilish. This beer is deep and complex and made to be cherished. Very warming and very well done. haddon90 (1036), Alexandria, Virginia, USA

Split this with kmfdm91 at O’Briens in San Diego back in September. What a beer. Thick aroma. Maple sugar, caramel, vanilla, and chocolate. Strong taste. The alcohol is certainly not masked. Very rich. Coated mouthfeel. Roasted malt, coffee, caramel, and chocolate. Great balance. Definitely the best stout I have ever had, and I was so blessed that O’Briens had it. What a treat. temporrari (327), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA

Bottle # 87. Thanks to jonwell. Pours black with a small brown head. The aroma is fantastic. Just a hint of bourbon, a bit of chocolate and coffee, and just a small touch of alcohol. Flavor is explosive, but very balanced. Oak, some alcohol, perhaps vanilla, cocoa, with coffee dominating the finish. Silky smooth and creamy on the palate. The aftertaste was marvelous and seemed to last forever. This was superb in every way.
7/30/07 I probably overrated this a bit when I had it. I know it’s a good beer, the plain version is terrific. But I’ve grown to not care for oak aging so much... and so I likely wouldn’t give it quite this high of a score today. BUT, not much I can do to change it since it’s very probable that I won’t taste this ever again. So I’m leaving it, with this note. wavesofgrain (2), California, USA does not count | 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Feb 3, 2004 Black pour with a brown head. Tastes like a shot of coffee and vodka combined...what a lovely combination! Reminds me of an alcoholic version of my favorite coffee beverage. I also noticed some woody flavors which really brought out the complexity of this beer. pineypower (1104), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA

My best friend throughout college and I sat down that night with a glass of this and a Montecristo #2, figured I might as well have the best with the best. I drank half my glass before having the cigar, ensuring it would not distort the taste. Pours out deep, black and thick, like syrup with a rich off white head. The aroma is intense with notes of coffee, chocolate bourbon and roasted malts. The palate is perfect very rich. The taste before the cigar was awesome and during the cigar out of this world. The #2 was a perfect compliment to this perfect beer. The taste is extremely complex with notes of bourbon, chocolate, coffee, oak and some molasses with a touch of dried fruit. Mild alcohol on the finish, otherwise well masked alcohol content. This beer is truly world class and lived up to every bit of hype it has. Much gratitude to kenb for trading for this beer. Much applause to alesmith
