Commercial Description:
Imperial Evil Dead Red Ale (also known as Dead by Dawn)

Alesmith's Decadence Anniversary Ale was originally brewed in 2005 to celebrate our first decade in business. The brewers at Alesmith had such a great time concocting Decadence that they decided to make it an annual event, and brew a new style each year to commemorate our Anniversary. The second release in the Decadence series, Dead by Dawn, was inspired by our own seasonal specialty ale, Evil Dead Red. What if we made it bigger, bolder and even more evil? The result is Decadence 2006 Dead by Dawn, a devilicious auburn-colored ale with a complex sweet caramel maltiness balanced by the just the right amount of hop bitterness. Dead by Dawn showcases an enticing hop flavor and intense hop aroma that rounds out this rich, full-bodied ale. Join our Anniversary Celebration with Decadence. You'll soon discover why Alesmith is known around the world as the place to find Legendary Craftsmanship.

Bottle. Reddish brown coloring. Ample 1 1/2" head. Cake stuffing, sweet, sugary, lemon-apricot custard hints. Inviting and I’m not an aroma kind of guy. Sponge-cake flaviring . . . not overpowering but stays with you for at least a minute. Medium to thin body. Dry finish with faintly tart, salty taste. Alesmith is always a great pour.

Poured a murky, brown red color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, pine, caramel malts, and dried fruits. Taste of pine, tobacco, resin, citrus fruits, sticky caramel malts, bubblegum, and light alcohol in the finish.

750 ml bottle. Pours a muddy dark brown with a small red tint and a medium sized creamy beige/light brown head. Lots of lacing. Sweet aroma of candied malts, caramel and earthy hops. Taste is pleasantly sweet with hints of caramel, candied malts, dates, brown sugar, pine and earthy hops. Another nice brew from Alesmith. Aging may better this one.

750, capped. Thanks, Foolish_Mortal! Great stuff. Dense, murky dark brown with light swirling gray film atop. No lace. Huge sweet brown sugar, brown bread, caramel on the nose, along with nuts and graham crackers. Medium body, light carb. Very delicate mid-palate, given the hefty look and beefy nose. Some caramel and toast flowing into a light spicy hop finish.

I’ve had this before and enjoyed it more then. The carbonation blew out of this beer all over the place so be careful. This beer looks awesome. Dark haze that is very cloudy. Hoppy sweet maple syrup flavor (scent as well). The beer is too sweet for me. Whoever said this was a Barley Wine might be right.

Bottle: The aroma has lots of caramel, toffee, mild citrus hops, and faint fruit. It pours a dark copper with a touch of haze with a large creamy beige head with excellent retention. The head leaves thick sheets of foam on the glass. It really is an impressive looking beer. The flavor starts with lots of caramel up front mixed with some light toffee. There is some faint fruitiness in the background. The finish has muted citrus hops with some faint nuttiness and oxidation (not in a bad way). The alcohol is hidden very well. This really tastes like an aged Barley Wine. It’s medium-full bodied with a slightly syrupy mouthfeel and soft carbonation.

Bottle courtesy of 11026. Dark ruby/brown huge rocky beige head. Aroma is malt heavy through and through. Toffee, mollasses, taosted bread, and faint pine resin. Flavor much the same, huge toffee/mollasses, borderline cloying at times. Faint pine resin again, but nowhere near enough to balance. Odd this kind of malt bomb I usually dig, but something just doesn’t mesh for me here.

750ml bottle. Aroma: Bready malt, toffee, grapefruit and pine resin, vanilla and coconut, and some light whiskey notes. Appearance: Dark, dark red in color. Light beige head was small and foamy with fair retention. Fair lacing. Flavor: Rich caramel, bread dough, raisins and figs, grapefruit and pine, peppery spice and vanilla, toasted nuts and grass. Some welcome bitterness into the finish, be still finishes with some sweetness. Palate: Medium-full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Alcohol warmth in back of mouth. Overall: Solid and well balanced. Complex flavors but still pleasant to drink. Only quibble is one I have a lot with Alesmith: Undercarbonated.
