Pours a garnet color with a thin off-white head. Nose is a nice mix of caramel malts and hoppy bitterness. Flavor is very similar to aroma with great balance (as per usual with the brewer). Alcohol is well hidden throughout. Very tasty, matched very well with my mom’s indian style lentil soup. A tasty treat that I wish I had more of. Thanks Larry! lordeche (397), Quincy, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 6, 2007 Pours dark ruby with two fingers of tan head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, nuttiness, oak, and piney hops. Amazingly well balanced - hides the 9.9% extremely well. Sweet caramel malt flavor complimented by piney hop notes. Palate is incredible- creamy with a slight dry finish. brewandbbq (269), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 5, 2007 Pours hazy, dark amber, with a beige head of a half-inch.
Retention is average as well as some light lacework.
Aromatics are a balance of malt and hops. Caramel with some tropical notes. Buscuit notes with toffee and orange.
I was really loking for a blast of hops, which is definately lacking.
Mouthfeel is medium and tacky. Some creaminess cuts through a slightly syrupy character..
The pallet is heavy on the malt and medium on the hops. Plenty of caramelized sugar, and almost a bit smokey. Slightly roasty and drizzled with brown sugar syrup.
Bitterness is medium, and hop flavors are restrained. Mostly fruit notes coming through, and lacking any resinous bite.
Finishes sweetish and long.
Maybe a fresh example has more of what I was expecting.

Aroma is amazing rich toffee malts, spicey hop resins, begging to be drunk but sniffing is good enough. Taste is again piney hop resins spicey, rich and incredibly full but still super drinkable. Im so glad i went for this beer as i was in 2 minds over trading for it. Turns out to be one of the finest iv ever had. piscator34 (1122), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 2, 2007 Bottled sample via oakbluff. Deep amber in colour with medium carbonation. Rich caramel aromas dominate, along with some subtle green hop notes and a touch of fruit. More strong caramel notes imn the mouth, but they are tempered by some light citric American hops, hazelnuts, bread, and vanilla. Heavy im the mouth, but there’s enough bitterness to keep things in check. Classy. bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA

Citrus, rich caramel flavor with slight spice. Medium body. Citrus and malt lingering. 2005 was better, this was good, but underwhelming.
