Pours a golden yellow with an immense off-white head. C-hop aroma. An excerise in expertly crafted balance, with the malt at the forefront of the sip followed like a lion cub by the citrus hops. shadey (1496), Rochester, New York, USA

Poured a deep garnet red with a thin wispy head of creamy tan bubbles. Aroma is sweet caramel malts that are rich and aromatic with a nice hop highlight. Flavors are a nice match to the aroma. The hops are slightly more prominent on the tongue than in the nose. Pretty sweet overall. I didn’t like this nearly as much as the 2005 version.7/4/7/4/16
2006 Bottle Consumed February 2009. 750ml. The aroma is surprisingly malty. Amazingly complex but the hops have definitely faded; adding little but to the complexity of the lingering flavors. This beer has become a luscious malt cocktail that is full of caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, toffee... and so much more. Virtually no alcohol burn. This beer has really taken on new life in age. 8/4/8/5/18 Illini08 (528), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 13, 2007 Poured a luscious dark crimson with a creamy light brown head. Rich and sweet aroma of honey, toffee, and ruby red grapefruit. Flavor is surprisingly sweet, with notes of honey wheat bread, sweet toffee, molasses, and some bitter yet sweet ruby red grapefruit. The hops are complex and tasty but are almost defeated by the complex sweet malt here. I would almost try to classify this as a barley wine, given the intense malt profile. I admit I was looking for something more akin to a bold and shockingly hoppy ASA rather than a delicately balanced and complex ale, but I suppose that’s what the winter Yulesmith is for. Different than what I thought it would be and milder, but an excellent ale from the masters. Rastacouere (5553), Montréal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 12, 2007 Cloudy dark earthy copper. Gentle off-white foam covers it all. Obviously American is what the nose told me straight off the gate. A massive, burning nose of strong syrupy caramel malts with lots of earthy nuances from both the malts and hops. Strongly toasty, thick, pudding-like richness in the malts. Considerable hop bill procures a growing bitterness that neglects aromatics a bit to allow the malt’s beefiness to shine. I’m sure this is exactly what they were going for, but I could never drink a whole bottle.
