Commercial Description:
Imperial Evil Dead Red Ale (also known as Dead by Dawn)

Alesmith's Decadence Anniversary Ale was originally brewed in 2005 to celebrate our first decade in business. The brewers at Alesmith had such a great time concocting Decadence that they decided to make it an annual event, and brew a new style each year to commemorate our Anniversary. The second release in the Decadence series, Dead by Dawn, was inspired by our own seasonal specialty ale, Evil Dead Red. What if we made it bigger, bolder and even more evil? The result is Decadence 2006 Dead by Dawn, a devilicious auburn-colored ale with a complex sweet caramel maltiness balanced by the just the right amount of hop bitterness. Dead by Dawn showcases an enticing hop flavor and intense hop aroma that rounds out this rich, full-bodied ale. Join our Anniversary Celebration with Decadence. You'll soon discover why Alesmith is known around the world as the place to find Legendary Craftsmanship.

Bottle shared at the Columbus tasting. Not sure by who. SORRY guys! Sweet smell of bread, figs, and syrup. Taste was malts, hop, chocolate, molases, and some fruit. Figs, grapes maybe. Alcohol was extremly well hidden.

Bottle shared with Mds, Hogtown Harry, Blankboy, and Gregclow - courtesy of Blankboy. Woo-hoo! A new alesmith, thanks so much for sharing Paul!! Lovely aroma - soft sweet cake, hops, floral - wow. Deep glowing dark brown/red, ,small murky brown head. Taste - surprisingly easy to drink - lots of hops up front, long alcohol burn in finish. Lots of wood. I hate using the word, but this is very smooth. Very sweet. Not complex, but great - really enjoyed it.

750 ml bottle, purchased at brewery. Pours deep reddish brown, mostly clear with a large fluffy beige head and spotty lace. As expected it gives off a rich malty aroma with molasses and dark fruit, light and herbal floral hops, ripe peach and nectarine, orange zest and earth. Flavor shows off molasses and chocolatey malts, bitter herbs, hints of citrus and tart berries, becomes more roasty as it warms, with dusty notes and pine needles as well. Full body slightly oily mouthfeel with very gentle carbonation.

75cl, put into my belly on 10/10/07. Pours a deep red, almost brown with light tan foam that has world class retention and lacing, just a beautiful looking beer sitting here in my Maudite tulip. Aroma is thick toffee like malts with some slightly citrusy hops peaking through. Huge rich maltiness, I say HUGE RICH maltiness!! Damn, I’ve always been a sucker for a GOOD American Red Ale and damn if this doesn’t set the bar. Just enough age on it that the malt really hits you, there’s some subtle hoppiness in there but the malt really just grabs you right in the jimmy. Fantastic mouthfeel for a 10% beer.

My bottle (750ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, tupalev & mds -- courtesy of toncatcher. Always exciting to try a new AleSmith! Pours a hazy amber-brown with a large mostly-lasting frothy off-white head (4+). Wonderful aroma with lots of hops (spicy, citrusy and resiny), caramel malt, alcohol, fruit and toffee. Flavour’s no slouch, slightly sweet with lots of hops and caramel malt along with some fruit and a long, dry, bitter finish. Goes down pretty smooth, the alcohol’s present but doesn’t taste like 9.9%. Medium to full bodied. Another great AleSmith beer -- "Dead by Dawn! Dead by Dawn! Dead by Dawn!"

Thanks to MikeTD. Murky red-brown pour, big beige head. Aroma is big with lots of citrus hoppiness, orange and pineapple. Flavor is caramel, pineapple hops, brown sugar sweetness, citrus and piney hops. Aftertatse is caramel, full and chewy. Thick mouthfeel, good amount of hop bitterness and tons of malt.

Bottle. Slightly murky reddish-mahogany body with a large creamy white head. Interesting aroma with some fruityness but not entirely pronounced - there’s some nice cheesiness and mild tartness as well that contribute to the otherwise pleasant fragrant aroma...orangey resin hops and alcohol notes are there too. Quite smooth - caramel, butterscotch, and vinous chocolatey notes, and there’s hop resin character in the middle and into the finish. Alcohol is also present but overall it’s really quaffable...

Bottle (750ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, mds and tupalev - blankboy’s bottle. Rating #2600. Poured cloudy deep red with an average lasting frothy tan head. Creamy aroma (yes! I stand by that!) lush resin/herbal hops, toasty fresh rye malt, plenty of alcohol underpinning it all. Amazing taste - after the big aroma, this turns out to be a smooth, perfectly balanced medley of resiny hop, roast light rye malt and alcohol, running to a strong bitter pithy finish and linger. Thick mouthfeel, nice astringency, just the perfect carbonation level - another amazing Alesmith offering - thanks for sharing, Paul!
