WeeHeavySD (1841), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jun 25, 2007 Updated: Sep 29, 2007 First Rating of this fine brew. Second first rating of an 11th Anniversary beer. 1st and 1st=11 maybe. I don’t know just came to me. Super excited about this beer, was excited about it earlier in 06 when I thought it would be out and I’m still excited now. On to the review...Pours a really nice reddish amber with a 3 finger puffy semi stable tan head. The aroma is great very sweet and malty with hops there but not overwhelmingly hoppy like a dipa. The nose is very balanced and portends a similarly high quality brew. I’ve enjoyed evil dead red the few times I’ve had it and I never shy away from making a beer bigger. The taste is very very nice. Big bold malt profile very nicely balanced with a fresh hop feeling. There is a bit of sugary caramel molasses sweetness there and the hops round out the beer nicely. The balance is just right, as much as anyone can like hops its nice to have them subdued in a beer where they are not the main attraction. The mouth feel is great nice feeling throughout and a nice light mouth warming as well. Overall this is a pretty damn incredible beer. Thanks so much to Peter, Todd (for coming up with Evil Dead Red the basis of this beer), Bill and Matt at Alesmith you guys make killer beer are cool and damn modest all at the same time. Lastly gotta love the name, its perfect. (EVEN BETTER ON CASK)
SQNfan (474), Wheaton, Illinois, USA Oct 2, 2008 This poured brown in color with mahogony highlights and a moderate beige head of medium-sized bubbles. The nose showed off sweeter scents of toffee, caramel malt, fudge and molasses. In the mouth it was medium-bodied with good carbonation and oxidized flavors. While I don’t mind the oxidation it seems that this has overshadowed the complexity. AmEricanbrew (1008), Swamp Shreveport, Left Coast, Louisiana, USA Sep 28, 2008 Ruby red with a viscous tan head. big aroma is oxidized with sweet bready malts. Medium body and softly carbonated. Flavor is big and bold toasted caramel sweet yeasty bread. Tasted a little bit of hops in a burp. Finishes with a spicy alcohol bitterness. Mosl of the time i enjoy aged, oxidized brews, so this one was fine by me. Suttree (2335), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Sep 27, 2008 Thanks to Secret Santa. So afer reading that this may be st it’s prime, The Bride and I decided it was time to go ahead and sample this. after a messy opening, it poured a almost purplish red with a pretty sizeable beige head aroma was a lot of English toffee, mixed with some molasses and brown sugar. Very rich and smooth. Flavor wa sweet, a lot of toffee, and vanilla in the background. As it warms, notes of almond or black walnut emerge. some rum, and just the slightest hint of coffee in the background. The second pour was cloudier and yeastier, as one might imagine, ith a few grassy and herbal notes. Fabulous beer. faroeviking (4389), Faroese Autonomous Beer Republic, Denmark Sep 15, 2008 Botella. Dead by Dawn. Hazy deep amber. Sweet malty alco dark fruity aroma. Sweet fruity deep malty alco bitter flavour. Sweet dark frutish warming finish. Great brew! gunhaver (660), Tampa, Florida, USA Sep 10, 2008 Bottle, at BA Throwdown #2. Brownish pour, opaque, creamy white head, and nice wet lacing. Mostly caramel and vanilla nose, some hops, elements of allspice and very distant pumpkin. Smooth flavors of caramel, vanilla, cinnamon, malty goodness, some chocolate in the finish. Aged well, smooth medium body, very drinkable and devoid of oxidation.
