Beerlando (1269), Orlando, Florida, USA Mar 1, 2008 Wow, what a fantastic creation! Pours a deep, dark, cloudy muave color. A frothy tan head leaves spots and flares of lacing behind. The aroma is indescribably full, with rich caramel and toffee malts, huge nougat, massive pine hops, sweet biscuit, and heavy cream flooding the nose. The flavor lives up to the enormity of the aroma, as copious malts and smooth cream are balanced perfectly with huge pine hops. This one tastes like a hoppy milkshake! There’s even an unexpected chocolate malt component that adds to the richness. Just shy of full bodied, the only downfall to this brew is a slight alcoholic heat that burns a little on the way down. Still, it is smooth and well carbonated, and the richness and balance are too great to knock it down for the alcoholic heat. Part barleywine, part IIPA, and part malt bomb, this is just a huge, masterfully blended concoction that refuses to be pigeonholed into a particular classification. Simply awesome. AlesSmith rules!
footbalm (1212), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Sep 3, 2008 Updated: Sep 4, 2008Trust me, if I would have wanted my kitchen painted I would have hired a painter. Ummm, beer paint. Rerate; Now that I have had time to clean my kitchen I am ready to add a few things. I have NEVER had a bad beer from Alesmith so I was taken aback by the wave of beer that splattered me. I really need to get my ego in check and take all my beer out of my windows and stop trying to impress my neighbors. hillfiiiiire (165), Atoka, Tennessee, USA Sep 1, 2008 Dark auburn color with an almost tan head that looks rather enticing. The flavor is a subdued hop character that I would assume got that way through a little aging. Definitely plenty of caramel malts come out as a result. The flavor has a wonderfully pleasant note of chocolate in it as well, which I wouldn’t expect an a red ale. I really can’t get over well the caramel and chocolate come across in the flavor either. It’s fantastic. It finishes nice and smooth a a solid creamy body. Guys at Alesmith have done a great job here. ketchepillar (252), Des Moines, Iowa, USA Sep 1, 2008 My favorite part of this beer is the chocolate. I love the unexpected chocolate in lighter hoppier beers. A little bit of alcohol in the aroma and taste, but not too much. Anise. Good looking beer. Palate is solid but nothing too special. Chocolate in the finish is really really good, but the hops aren’t that great. crowderm (159), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Sep 1, 2008 Pours a thick ruby with a very solid, very persistent tan head. The aroma is caramel, sweet malts, and some very round, finely balanced hopiness. The flavor is similar, with more butterscotch and maybe a bit of peach. The hops and malt sweetness are just about perfect in terms of balance. The alcohol lends a bit of warmth to the finish, but the alcohol is otherwise hardly noticeable. Very hardy, creamy mouthfeel. Goes down velvety smooth. Excellent brew. Headbanger (975), Aurora, Illinois, USA Aug 31, 2008 750 ml bottle-Pours a dark ruby red body with anice tight off white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, sweetness, and hops. Taste of the same with some toffee and butterscotch thrown in. This full bodied brew is very well balanced and hides the alcohol very well. My first Alesmith and looking forward to many more.
