Commercial Description:
Alesmith’s Decadence Anniversary Ale was originally brewed in 2005 to celebrate our first decade in business. The brewers at Alesmith had such a great time concocting Decadence that they decided to make it an annual event. Alesmith 2008 is a traditional English-style Barleywine. Only the finest floor-malted barley and English hops were selected, in addition to a true top-cropping English yeast. Intensely malty and overflowing with flavors of caramel and toffee. Decadence 2008 showcases the very best of this classic English style.

22oz bottle. I don’t think this was infected. Its definitely not acidic. I think people just didn’t get what Peter was going for. Nose is slightly tart with lots of caramel and grain. The nose smells very young, everything is a little muted. I think this needs more time. Flavors are very good though. Up front is a strong berry tartness, slightly slightly sour but still very drinkable even to the non sour lovers among our group. Finishes with a very nice cherry vanilla caramel finish. I think Peter did exactly what he set out to do, make a traditional english barleywine the way they used to taste. Evidence has shown that alot of styles had some wildness in them at the time. I’m not sure how he got it here, but it didn’t seem wrong for the style. I think this is a tasty beer but not as good as the 07 or 05. About on par with the 06.

750. Pours ruddy brown w/ burgundy highlights. Good sized, creamy, tan head with good lace. Smells big and malty sweet with some toffee, red fruit and a hint of alcohol. Tastes sweet and caramelly and fruity malty. Big sweet malt flavors with toffee and caramel as well. Full body, good carbonation. Falls a little flat for me.

Bottle shared StFun. Pours dark maroon to brown with a soap bubble white head. The nose is tart sour cherries. Certainly not a good bottle. This sucks.

750ml bottle. Poured into Stone Barleywine glass. Nice froth on the head and aroma of cherry and raisin and maybe some molasses. The flavor is very complex and leaves a very thick coating on the tongue. Tastes of candied apple and dark maraschino cherry. Long aftertaste. I know some have complained this is sour, but I don’t detect a sourness.

(750ml bottle) Pours a lightly murky amber body with a small beige head. Aroma of cherry, light ash, roasted malt, raisins, and apple. Flavor raisin, caramel malt, apple, cherry, and grassy hops.

Dark ruby amber color with a thick tan head. Tart aroma of cherries, caramel, toffee, alcohol, and raisins. Sour flavor of apples, and cherries. Semi bitter and toasted finish. This was a bit of a disappointment considering the brewers reputation. The tanginess (infection?) overpowers and hides any other flavor complexities. Too bad. Still a tastier beer than most though.
