sauceyhops (20), carlsbad, California, USA Jun 14, 2008 Tasted at the VIP session of the Real Ale Festival. Pour is black with small, dark brown head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt. I was pretty impressed with the balance of the flavor. Strong roasted flavor with coffee. Hints of chocolate and oak. Very smooth finish... I would have to say that this is my favorite stout to date.
BrotherGrendel (189), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 18, 2008 On cask at the Real Ale Festival at PP Carlsbad. Appearance is dark brown hue, thin ring of tan creamy foam, minimal lacing. Smell is huge coffee malts, plenty of roast-toast, chocolate, grassy hops, light booze. Taste is hit strong by pure coffee grounds, quickly transitions to roast and chocolate cocoa, tinges of grassy bitter hops, finishes with coffee bitterness. Medium-bodied, creamy thick texture, mild carbonation. Coffee is super strong and abv is well-masked but lurking in the background, this one is up there with Founder’s breakfast stout for the most flavorful coffee stouts I’ve tasted, I sure hope to see this in bottle form sometime in the future. doubleo (966), San Diego, California, USA Jun 16, 2008 On cask at PP Real Ale Festival. Pours black with a thin, crisp, brown head. Smells dark and roasty and then of sweet coffee. Tastes dark and roasty and then dark, semi-sweet coffee. Tastes very good, the coffee is not overpowering. Full bodied, good carbonation. hapjydeuce (622), Carlsbad, USA Jun 15, 2008 Multiple samplers at the Real Ale Festival VIP Session at Pizza Port Carlsbad on 6/13. Another big standout of the tasting! Pitch black, crude oil appearance with minimal carbonation and no head. Serving this one from the cask beer engine just made it that much tastier. Robust coffee grounds and espresso aroma, but still maintains the well-balanced roasted malt and vanilla profile of Speedway. Serious amounts of rich black chocolate and amazing earthy coffee notes with burnt wood and some tobacco. Bitterness is more pronounced and prolonged with twice the coffee. Surprisingly drinkable with a thick, cheek-biting body. While I would still prefer regular Speedway, this is great! wetherel (1151), Encinitas, California, USA Jun 13, 2008 An awesome brew from Alesmith. Tried on cask at the PP Real Ale Festival. Very smooth. Very flavorful. Not too dry or too sweet. Low carbonation. Very easy to drink. Very easy. Chocolae aroma and taste. No over the top coffee bitterness that I was expecting. Excellent.
