Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

Good brew, malty, not as hoppy as thier other beers, also a bit fruity, I guess that can be expected with the belgian yeast.

Very hazy dirty brown pour. Head sticks to the sides of the glass only. Raisin, dark fruits and brown sugar on the nose. Flavor is very nice...caramel, brown sugar, ripe fruits...and a rum raisin bread pudding flavor that I just love. Good mouth fell and nice carbonation on the tongue. Love this.

Murky brown-red pour, no head at all. Aroma is caramel, raisens, berries. Flavor is a ton of caramel, brown sugar, mollasses, roasted touch and chocolate. Sweet but with a roasted aftertaste. Surprisingly carbonated yet zero head.

Thanks to crizay for sharing. Pour is a dark amber with a tiny white head. Aroma of sweet malts and booze...a bit yeasty too. Flavor of candi sugar and sweet malts with a bit of alcohol. Medium bodied and low carbonation.

huge aroma of malt, cherries, and chocolate. flavour is super malty, and have some wonderful notes of fruit cake, and ripe fruit. Quite a significant sherry finish. Nice and sweet, a good winter warmer. very doppelbockesque.

beautiful dark mahogany color right out of the bottle. It might have just been our bottle but there was absolutely no head what so ever. smells of rich caramel and hints of vanilla, and tastes the same with a little of the belgian yeast tang. a very heavy but great beer.

Deep clear mahogany in colour, beige coloured head that wasn’t as big as I’d expect from a Belgian Strong Ale, fair retention, very sparce lacing. The aroma is chocolaty, some spice, lots of caramel, very light alcohol, quite malty, some candy sugar, plums. The flavour is malty, chocolate, plums, toffee, some peaches, deep malt and noticable alcohol. Lightly alcoholic mouthfeel, medium body, high carbonation. Finishes very warm, long, spicy with some chocolate. There is still lots of alcohol in this even after 4 years. No signs of mellowing out. Starting to get a bit thin.

750ml bottle obtained in a trade with <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?U target=blank>Sven, thanks Steven.
Opened on September 3, 2007.
Vintage 2003.
