Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

Dark redish color. Smell of candy, brown sugar, dark fruit, malt, vanila, spiced fruit, chocolate, caramel and yeast. Taste of the same with oak and alcohol. Warms the belly! Thanks to weeheavy for the bottle.

Caramel vanilla riding a wave of alcohol dominate the aroma, the lack of any head is strange given all the Belgian yeast thats used, taste is all about the vanillay caramel with hints of apple and chocolate, again the carbonation is really low,the description calls it clean and crisp,it sure wasn’t that, body is on the lighter side.Smooth and tastey, thanks Kingpin

Finally entering all my "Better Know a Style: Belgian Strong Ale" tasting 07 results. Yeast aroma with dark fruit and mollasses notes. Appearance of red with white head. Moderate sweetness with some fruitiness as well. Palate was too thin and had too much alc.

Pour a brownish red with a thin off white head. Aroma of dark fruits and spices. Very malty with hints of spices, and some vanilla. Nice full mouth feel. Solid Grand Cru.

Dark Brown Color with Red Hue with Quickly Fading Sandy Head. Aroma is of Dark Bread, Dried Fruit, Candy Sugar and Light Spices. The Mouthfeel is Lightly Syrupy and Smooth with a Medium Body to it. Warming is Notable but Very Smooth. The Taste is Just What the Aroma Suggests...Wonderful Flavor Notes of Spice, Fruit, Bread and Creamy Caramel/Vanilla. Overall Quite Sugary Sweet.. Nice Even Keeled Ending. Perhaps Not Their Best Offering, But Still A Wonderful Brew.

Poured a deep brown/red from the bottle with a thin head. Smelled nice of dark fruits, candi sugar, and some faint spices. Taste was much the same, definitely more of a sweet beer, but I really appreciated the balance. Everything seemed to come out in the right proportion. Very well balanced.

750 ml. Pours a cloudy amber. I am just not worthy to give this a true rating. So much complexity in the aroma and flavor, I am afraid to rate it as I might miss something. Definitey a sweet, fruity, yeast aroma. I can taste many different flavors, such as caramel malt, raisins, and dried fuit. I am not finding the chocolate as the description states, but a can taste the vanilla, with other mild spices. However, something is slighlty missing...maybe a bit rough around the edges? I am not sure what vintage this is, but I expect 2006, so it probably needs to mellow out for another year or so to truely be excellent. Still a very good beer and one of my favorite breweries.
