Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

Very alcoholic nose with a slight touch of dms, clove, toasted caramel and herbal notes. Hot and residual sugar heavy palate. Some candy sugar induced white fruit notes with some biscuity finish characters. Overall very alcohol forward.

This was good but not as complex as it might have been. Great looking packaging. Flavor is loaded with malt and Belgian yeast. Aroma has more malt, quite sweet. There is lots of fruit and some sugar here, some vanilla but no chocolate. A thick and heavy beer.

First beer tried at JK’s Spring Gathering. Pours a rusty copper amber with a very thin head. Soon a cream colored ring with thick bubbles develop on top. The aroma is thick with sweet and fruity malts of plums, apricots, toffee, caramel, and molasses. Taste is roasted and smoky mesquite wood. Fruity flavors picked up were carameled apples, dates, plums, and brown sugar. Finish is sticky sweet with soft carbonation. This Grand Cru reminds me of a good aged tawny port.

Pretty damn good, I was expecting a bit more though. Lots of caramel, fruit and toffee like flavors - silky on the palate and very balanced for a 10.6% ale, nice beer!!!

Coffee and chocolate and mmm......I had heard good things about alesmith so I was excited to discover that my favorite ’walk to’ bar served it. Didn’t realize the alc. % ’till I had finished...Had an inspiring moonlight stroll home.

4/6/07: Bottle.
Burnt caramel- brown body. No head – no lace. Good amount of yeast floats around in glass. Flavor of alcohol, raisin, plum and brown sugar. Nose of alcohol and raisin. Slight sour finish and quite potent. Rating #666… 666 Sound Treat -- It’s Raining Blood!!!

Bottle. Candy-apple orange-brown coloring. Hazy. Lots of residue in bottom ofglass. Limited light tan head. Malty, trappist yeasty scent. Smooth, sugary glavoring with explosive malty report in back of throat. Very nice way to start the evening.
