Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

Light brown with off-white quickly-fading head. Nose of vanilla and fruits. Flavor is initially tart/sour fruits with cherries predominating, caramel maltiness, followed by an alcohol burn on the tonsils. Pretty impressive.

Had this a few weeks ago, while at the pool. Nose of dried fruit & berries; malt, spices & a hint of alcohol. Pours a sparkling hazy walnut with amber highlights. The frothy blonde head is immediately diminishing. The very sweet flavor is mostly caramel with moderate acidity. The warm alcohol middle finishes sweet and tangy. The full body is fizzy and syrupy with a cloying feel to the finish.

Very nice drink. Light brown with reddish highlighting, it has a an aroma of berries and cherries, caramel, vanilla, oak, and alcohol. Very smooth to drink despite its impressive abv. The flavor was sweet and malty, warm with alcohol, and rife with slightly tart fruit. It finishes sweet with a surprisingly light alcohol burn. Nice, indeed.

Thanks to whoever brought this beer to kp’s Cellar Party. A nice amber/brown pour with an aroma of fruit, sweet malt and yeast. A nice sweet flavor with the taste of alcohol at the end. A smooth easy texture. This beer was a true pleasure. I love a beer with a sweet flavor and a hint of alcohol to close the deal.

Translucent mahogany brown w/ brown foam. Sweet, toasty, caramel aroma w/ notes of fruit (peach, banana), pepper (alcohol) & licorice. Medium, moderately effervescent feel. Relatively complex malty flavour w/ a fruity, vinous quality & spicy, peppery edge.

I’ve had a few tastes of this over the past week and found it to be too alcoholic in flavor. Has the similar feel and appearance as other alesmiths but not very memorable.

Pours nearly flat from the 750ml bottle. Smell is yeasty fruit and fig (is that a fruit too?). Looks nice, with little specks of brewer’s yeast floatin’ ’round. Taste is surprisingly mellow (2006 bottling). Palate is sticky. For my first Alesmith offering (finally available around me), I was unfortunately not terribly impressed. Guess that’s what happens with huge expectations. Next up, Speedway Stout, but not tonight.
