Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

Translucent mahogany brown w/ brown foam. Sweet, toasty, caramel aroma w/ notes of fruit (peach, banana), pepper (alcohol) & licorice. Medium, moderately effervescent feel. Relatively complex malty flavour w/ a fruity, vinous quality & spicy, peppery edge.

I’ve had a few tastes of this over the past week and found it to be too alcoholic in flavor. Has the similar feel and appearance as other alesmiths but not very memorable.

Pours nearly flat from the 750ml bottle. Smell is yeasty fruit and fig (is that a fruit too?). Looks nice, with little specks of brewer’s yeast floatin’ ’round. Taste is surprisingly mellow (2006 bottling). Palate is sticky. For my first Alesmith offering (finally available around me), I was unfortunately not terribly impressed. Guess that’s what happens with huge expectations. Next up, Speedway Stout, but not tonight.

at first this was just massive alcohol up front, both in aroma and flavor. but once my palate adapted i found quite a bit more.... unfortunately, i did not put what more that was down in my notes.

750. Pours toffee-amber, headless and still. Still body as well. Rich, thich, syrupy sweet. Apple-y. Complex and delicious but definitely on the syrupy side.

On tap at Downtown Johnny Brown’s in SD. Pours amber brown with a fleeting white thin head. This beer defines chewy. It damn near numbs the mouth when you drink it. I get percimmons as a dominant flavor. Ground ripened percimmons after an October frost. Prunes, plums, and raisins. Sweet, not tart. Drying bitterness. UPDATE 3/2008: In the bottle from John’s Market in Portland. Looks gorgeous in the tulip. Smooth to drink and rich with all the same complexities indicated above. Still a solid classic.

The Alesmith Grand Cru was a very nice treat indeed. The dark belgian strong ale poured a very nice caramel color with a head that left rather quickly. There was a decent amount of "fizzle" in the pour from the carbonation. The aroma was nice--plenty of whiskey like aromas with some dark fruits mixed in--complex to be sure. The taste is the same. Plenty of big flavors that you need to take your time to work through. The main tastes are of caramel malt, dark fruit, bourbon, and molasses I would say. I really enjoyed the interesting taste. This was very easy to drink as it warmed--and would make a great sipper in the evening."

Bottle. Pours a ruddy, cloudy orange color with a fine yellowish head. Aroma is strong toffee and candied orange peel with a hint of alcohol. Flavor is super smooth and has a strong alcohol bite. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and sugary. Very well balanced with a great velvety mouthfeel and minimal carbonation. (On tap, at the brewery, this beer is much more complex... more dark fruit and cider/pear flavors. Much better than on tap. Probably a 4.2+ on tap).
