Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

750 ml bottle of an unknown vintage, maybe a few years old thanks to Odeed. Pours a deep ruby hue with a medium tan head. The aroma is great; loads of dark fruit, especially prunes, toasted malts, sweet vanilla and caramel. The flavor is similar; a sweet mix of dark fruit, caramel, light yeast, almost tart or sour fruit, lots of sweet vanilla and light chocolates, very vinous. Quite different than I expected, and in a great way. I love me some AleSmith. Light warmth and a medium to light fizzy body.

Huge thanks to pepsican, badbeer, and iowaherkeye. Bottle from 2003. Mostly like an old english barley wine. Toffee. Old beer must in the finish. I’m sure it was good a few years ago.

Appearance: Pours a dark mohagony with almost no head. Very thick and cloudy looking. Aroma: Dark fruits, plums, raisins, spices, and Belgian yeast. Taste: Belgian yeast, candi sugar, herbal hops, bready malt. Mouthfeel: Alesmith trademark silkiness. Overall: Fantastic.

Outrageous! Thick brown pour with a white head. Aroam of caramel, vanilla, and chocolate. First taste gives you fruit, and some caramel. Caramel, chocolate, vanilla dominate the flavor with a slight hint of alcohol.

Bomber. Pours like translucent cola, with about the same amount and consistency of head. Heady aroma of caramel and toasted malt and yeast. Light, sweet, and yet promisingly boozy. Initial flavor is significantly more full and darker than the aroma let on. Raisins, chocolate, vanilla extract (alcohol interference). The initial tang really gets things off on the right foot though. There isn’t a ton of movement in the palate after that initial tangy flare which then fades to the to the aforementioned flavors. I’m not gettin the toasty flavor in the finish that the description offers up. There are great beers, good beers, decent beers, acceptable beers, and unacceptable beers. This one falls between great and good. Mostly, I think, because the body and mouthfeel, for my taste, leave a bit to be desired. Still, it is quite yummy.

2008 Bottle. Bottle had very little carbonation. Aroma of apples, pears and some spices. Flavor is pretty fruity with some hints of pepper and dark fruit type flavors. Not a big fan of the acidic finish, but I get that with most belgian style ales. This ended up being much smoother and more flavorful once it warmed up.

Foil-topped 750. Pours clear amber with a scant but lacy head. Full sweet body and minimal carbonation. Sweet taste of toast, toffee and fruit. Interesting, but not quite so balanced as the brewer claims.

Another amazing beer by AleSmith...still holds up as my favorite brewer. Hazy copper pour with hints of tangerine and rust produced a creamy eggshell head. Aroma is caramel, spice, brown sugar, and vanilla. Full-flavored with notes of honey-baked biscuit, toffee, and belgian yeast. Not quite syrupy palate...yum!!! Love that AleSmith is readily available...
