Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

Bottle from Kegbear. Light amber pour with a thin white head. Real sweet smell, some great fruits. Taste is sweet and fruity with some malt and a bit of hops. The alcohol is well hidden but you definitely taste some in the aftertaste. Great beer would buy again

2004 vintage. Appearance: Pours a hazy, burnt orange body with a very thin, subsequently short-lived, white head. Smell: Pleasantly fragrant aroma smelling of alcohol-soaked peaches and apricots, candyish malts, silkweed honey, an underlying spicy coriander character and sweetly-scented honeysuckle. Taste: Rich honeyed maltiness with a sweet, toothsome taste of confectioners’ sugar. Pleasant kick of spices marked by a well-defined coriander taste. Toss in a splash of Kajsijevaca apricot brandy. Additional fruit flavors of peaches and white grapes. An incredibly light bitterness is all that remains of the hops at this point. The finish is warming with a lingering touch of sweet fruitiness. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-high carbonation, which, thankfully, brings some appreciated levity to prevent any syrupiness. Drinkability: As always, an outstanding job by the good people over at AleSmith. In fact, I don’t recall ever having a brew from them that I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with an average, rocky, white head, somewhat diminishing with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, hay, straw), light hops (grass), average yeast (horse blanket, barnyard, earth) with notes of apple, coriander, and pear. Medium bodied, slick texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness and acidity, moderate bitterness.

Pours a luminescent yellow with a thick pillowy white head. Aroma is of heavy coriander, alcohol, and some muted belgian yeast notes. Taste is of fresh coriander, lots of alcohol, and too much carbonation. Once I worked out a lot of the carbonation, I found this beer much more enjoyable (way too prickly as bottled). This beer is NOT dry at all. It was quite apparent that there was a high finishing gravity, as evidenced by the thick mouthfeel and lingering on the palate. The coriander really accumulates quickly to an annoying level, making any more than half of a glass of this un-drinkable. However, if you stay within these boundaries, this was a fairly enjoyable beer, though not stupendous. Doesn’t come close to challenging their Grand Cru in my opinion.

notice the coriander on this, spritzy palate, and mild trappist quality, a good belgian with a fun american twist, good stuff.

22oz bottle. Another homerun from Alesmith. Poured a straw color. Fine but restrained aroma of wheat, banana, yeast, orange peel and coriander. Taste is perfectly balanced. This is more like a cross between a Belgian Wit and a Belgian Abbey Tripel. Perfectly done it has a heavy sweet finish with huge long caramel notes and yeasty heavy notes, but the front half of the beer is all wit. Orange peel, coriander, cinnamon and grapefruit all come into play. Wonderfully crafted beer. As a side note my bottle listed the abv as 11%. It didn’t taste remotely close to that. More like 8 or 8.5. Very well hidden.
