Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer’s dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with an average, rocky, white head, somewhat diminishing with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, hay, straw), light hops (grass), average yeast (horse blanket, barnyard, earth) with notes of apple, coriander, and pear. Medium bodied, slick texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness and acidity, moderate bitterness.

Pours a luminescent yellow with a thick pillowy white head. Aroma is of heavy coriander, alcohol, and some muted belgian yeast notes. Taste is of fresh coriander, lots of alcohol, and too much carbonation. Once I worked out a lot of the carbonation, I found this beer much more enjoyable (way too prickly as bottled). This beer is NOT dry at all. It was quite apparent that there was a high finishing gravity, as evidenced by the thick mouthfeel and lingering on the palate. The coriander really accumulates quickly to an annoying level, making any more than half of a glass of this un-drinkable. However, if you stay within these boundaries, this was a fairly enjoyable beer, though not stupendous. Doesn’t come close to challenging their Grand Cru in my opinion.

notice the coriander on this, spritzy palate, and mild trappist quality, a good belgian with a fun american twist, good stuff.

22oz bottle. Another homerun from Alesmith. Poured a straw color. Fine but restrained aroma of wheat, banana, yeast, orange peel and coriander. Taste is perfectly balanced. This is more like a cross between a Belgian Wit and a Belgian Abbey Tripel. Perfectly done it has a heavy sweet finish with huge long caramel notes and yeasty heavy notes, but the front half of the beer is all wit. Orange peel, coriander, cinnamon and grapefruit all come into play. Wonderfully crafted beer. As a side note my bottle listed the abv as 11%. It didn’t taste remotely close to that. More like 8 or 8.5. Very well hidden.

750ml bottle: This one pours a hazy, golden color. Mine actually had almost no head on it at all. There was no "pop" when I opened it either. Very nice aroma. Banana, cloves, wheat, spices, sweetness, and a few others. Very nice taste. Slight notes of the bananas, coriander, yeast breadiness, other spices and fruits. This is a very nice brew.

Draught at the Red. Hazy gold with a creamy white head. Sweet aroma. Plenty of fruity notes with banana domination, some spicing, and light tartness. The flavor has that same fruity sweetness, with some orange/banana, and a spicy and alcoholic wrap-up. A lemony, tangy citrus flavor come in a bit later. The sugar lightens the body to a medium clip; much easier to drink than the grand cru, and with very creamy, tight carbonation. For 11%, this is insanely easy to put down. The banana/spice flavors and creamy texture make me think of a belgian pale-strong crossed with a German hef. Definitely the preferred of their big Belgian styled offerings a this point.
