Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

Spicy alcohol melts into malty mild funkiness. Sharp flavors, a hint of cherry cough drop. The spiciness somehow doesnt really have much flavor, but more of a presence. A unique front flavor from the yeast, maybe its the coriander, but it tastes like the yeast. An impressive beverage, but it comes short of excellence. Also, my bottle says ABV 11percent not 10. Good use of candi-sugar, its completely hidden and non-raw tasting, which is hard to do.

Enjoyed this on tap at the brewery. A creamier version of Lil Devil with a higher presence of alcohol. Agressive, but a bit mild for my taste. Re-rated from a 1999 bottle shared with ajm and shyam at Lucky Baldwin’s. What an amazing testament to the durability and complexity of great beer. Pours a cloudy toffee color with a tiny ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass. Smells and tastes strongly of caramel, alcohol, yeast, and apples. Tastes like a caramel apple tucked inside a croissant. Crazy.

On tap at The Neighborhood in San Diego. Slightly hazy light amber, low off-white head. Boozy toffee and honey aroma, subtle spiciness. Sweet liquory toffee, an orange brandy essence, very smooth and warming. Sweet through the finish.

Bottle shared by wolf. Light yellow in color followed by a nice head. Aroma of orange peels and some sweet candy. Taste has a just the right amount of blended spice, orange/coriander, and candy. Super smooth as all Alesmith beers are. Creamy light texture, dry, but easy to drink. I would of never guessed this beer to be even close to ten percent alcohol...Overall a great beer. Thanks again wolf!

Bottle. Piercing spicy-sour nose, buttery yeast underneath. Clear gold-amber with thin patchy head and nice lacing. Flavor is buttery and spicy. Very smooth yeasty sweet. Creamy palate, cherry and strawberry notes. Exceedingly smooth example of the style, reminiscent of a Duvel but especially clean. Top notch.

On-tap at the brewery. Pours hazy, light amber with a good size offwhite head. Smells sweet and yeasty with spices, coriander of course. Tastes malty and sweet from the spices, tastes bready and yeasty as well. Lingering spice flavors. Medium body, good carbonation.

Hazy golden with a fleeting head. Nice fruity kiwi and watermelon aroma. Medium body. Good fruity sweet flavors of light pit fruit- apricots, peaches with a subtle earthy yeast. Nice Belgian style here.
