Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

On tap at the PB Tap Room this beer didn’t seem as fresh as when sampled at the brewery, duh. But lacking that freshness, fresh hops, spice, big power to match the alc just wasn’t there. Still an outstanding brew with a long finish. Poured with no head which could of helped this brew also. Only my 2nd go at this brew so maybe personally still trying to figure it out.

Thanks to Maniac as well for opening the bottle. Hazy, orange color with a decent head. Fruity (orange) and spice aroma. Spicy, fruity flavor. Fairly smooth ending, despite strong citrus and spice flavor.

Big thanks to maniac for opening this beauty. A very nice golden body with a thin white head. A very nice orange, citrus, chocolate aroma. Great taste, great spices with some nice citrus accents. Smooth ending with a nice spice.

750ml bottle about a year old. Clear amber color with a medium head. Nice lacing. Aroma of biscuity malts, candied oranges and a lot of spice. A little bit warm, but at 10% abv, it’s not bad. Finishes with tangy citrus and spiciness.

Poured golden orange, slightly haze from the yeast, with a generous fluffy head that had decent retention and very nice lacing. A classic looking beer in my Chimay glass. Aromas of spice, citrus and honey, less sweet than I expected. Spices and fruits are most apparent in the taste, also some pepper and bread flavors. Medium to full bodied, great creamy and slick mouthfeel, almost like a really good wine. Alcohol is not evident in the taste, but leaves a very warm feeling.

Cellared for about 15 months. Lovely orange color; slightly murky (particularly the last third of the bottle); very little head. Aroma citrus, yeast, and spices. Flavor sweet and yeasty with light spiciness; less sweet and flavorful than expected, and hoppier than expected; a touch sour; sweet and bitter finish; not as complex as hoped. Medium-thick body; lightly sticky. Not in the top echelon of beers, but solid and memorable.

I found this to be terribly enjoyable. Starts off a little sour but very spunky, with yeasty spices and an evident amount of lighter sweet fruits. Extremely lively on the palate, with great carbonation and an even better mouthfeel. Very well balanced, with just a hint of alcohol as it warms on the finish.
