Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

Bottle from Liquor Barn in Redding, CA. This gold brew was a bit spicy for a Belgian. Still, very interesting.

750 ML bottle-Poured an off orange color w/a moderate head. Sweet, earthy aroma. Sweet Belgian flavor w/traces of bread dough, candied sugar, light fruit, & a heavy dose of spice. Had a little bit of a dry finish. Pretty good stuff; alcohol was well hidden.

Bottle courtesy of BOLTZ7555. Aroma has notes of yeast, earth, flowers. Medium gold bodied with an average sized white frothy head that mostly diminished. Flavor is sweet and finishes yeasty and earthy. Palate is light-medium bodied and lively. Not bad but average.

750ml bottle. 2004 Vintage (at least I bought it in ’04). Poured a deep golden color with a small sized off white head. There’s lots of suspended floaters in the bottle with a huge old pile of yeast at the bottom. Aromas of corriander, bready yeastiness, spicy, and fruitiness. Tastes of corriander, bready, fruity, and some candi sugar sweetness. My bottle lists this one at 11% which was very well hidden.

Bottle from Liqour Barn in Redding, CA. Poured a golden color with a decent sized head. Smelled of spices. The high ABV was was hidden well by the complex flavors on the palate. A good beer, but not great.

750 bottle 11%abv. poured into a tulip glass has a yellow golden color and an off white one finger head that fell to a ring in the glass. aroma has spice, coriander, yeast and honey sweetness. underlying is citrus peels, hot alcohol, and hops. mouth feel is lighter with plenty of carbonation frothing it up. flavor comes across with candy sugar, spice, yeast, citrus peels, and underlying muted hops. finish goes towards dry but the candy sugar keeps it from getting there with spices left lingering. no doubt it is the spice and the amazing yeast that make this brew along with a perfect dose of candy sugar.
